Loose Lucy
Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jerry Garcia

Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission.

Loose Lucy is my delight
She comes running and we ball all night
Round and round and round and round
Don't take much to get me on the ground
She's my yo-yo, I'm her string
Listen to the birds on the hot wire sing

Chorus:
Singing yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Singing thank you, for a real good time

I got jumped coming home last night
Shadow in the alley turned out all my lights
Round and round and round and round
Don't take much to get me on the ground
Loose Lucy, she was sore
Says I know you can't want my love no more,

[chorus]

Bebop baby, how can this be
I know you've been out a cheating on me
Round and round and round and round
Don't take much to get the word around
Cross my heart and hope to die
I was just hanging out with the other guys

[chorus]

Went back home with two black eyes
You know I'll love her till the day I die
Round and round and round and round
Don't take much to get the word around
I like your smile but I ain't your type
Don't shake the tree when the fruit ain't ripe

[chorus]

After reading Thoms Wolfe's first novel, in which the phrase "the
Other One, is described in a psychedelic scene as ones. alter ego,
it's been my working theory that Hunter, Garcia and the Dead were
influenced(at least Hunter) by Thomos Wolfe. 69 Pages into his
second novel, this is about the third Dead song referenced. This is
from 1935.

pg. 69, Of Time and The River, Thomas Wole

"...Good ole Lucy's the girl for me-the loosier the better! Give me
Lucy any day...
"

I rest my case. Somebody quiz Hunter!

Wow! Such a great find. In my limited experience, Hunter prefers not
to be quizzed. But someone should find a way to get some time with
him soon for a larger biographical interview...

Thanks, David. I was halfway kidding when I suggested "quizzing"
Hunter, but the references that stand out for me, really do stand
out.

The second book starts out with an epic train trip, not unlike the
one to Terrapin. At one point, there are several paragraphs which
remind me of Stella Blue. It's nowhere near as obvious as the Loose
Lucy reference, yet it rings true to me. I'll post one of them
in the Stella topic, and see what others think.
