That seems like a bit of a stretch.

You gotta move? Shot by Bertha? Not implausibly cosmic references
for a song with few concrete reference points.

I sent this note to John Mayer :

Great to hear your guitar work Evolving on Bertha. One note about
the third verse:

Ducked back into a bar door
It was all night pouring
But not a drop on me

When you sing “rain” in there, you’re undermining the perfect
ambiguity of hunter’s lyric. Staying dry = he can’t afford a drink!

Excellent.

And spot on.

Unless you think it is about the accuracy of the pouring.

The lyrics in Hunter's 'Box Of Rain' are "It was all night pouring,
pouring rain", though Garcia just sang "It was all night pouring"

Seriously?
Wow.
I'll tell Mayer.

I always heard it as "dressed myself in dream, went down under the
sea" as in the sea of the subconscious. I think listening to Skull
and Roses, it's heard as "green" because Jerry stretches it out when
he sings.

I like "dream" but never heard it that way!

That's a nice one, all right!
