Terry -- I'm quite sure there are ways for Rincewind to "grow" that don't require him to stop running! Maybe he can surprise everyone by picking a _direction_ in which to run that, while it does get him out of danger and all that, is not the most obvious or direct way for him to get out of the way but *is* the way to save the world (again). And afterwards he can be uncomfortable in the face of indisputable evidence that he knew exactly what he was doing (heh).
Terry Pratchett (tpratchett) Sun 29 Jul 01 15:09
All... I can tell you that in The Last Hero, coming soon, he does show signs of realising that running only gets him somewhere *worse*:-) Terry

A slow study is better than nothing.
JaNell (goldennokomis) Tue 31 Jul 01 20:15
Terry, if this is too slow for you, Vicious Kitty from Neil's site's message board wants you to come over and be the entertainment at the party she threw for me... but I'll warn you, it involves nudity, magic tricks, and the Koala Piss Hat.
Mary Roane (the-roane) Sun 5 Aug 01 22:26
Hey, where is everybody? (Wind howls). Terry? JaNell? Man, that must be some party. I really just stopped by to say thank you to Terry, for a lot of fun reading, and some thought-provoking reading as well. And especially for being an absolute peach when I met him last spring in Chicago. But nobody can compete with a party that features the Koala Piss Hat..... wanders disconsolately off, wondering if she can find this legendary party.........
JaNell (goldennokomis) Mon 6 Aug 01 09:23
(knocks) Hey, y'all, anybody home? I could've sworn Mary was just here... Terry? *sigh*
With catlike tread (sumac) Mon 6 Aug 01 10:07
Wow, who left this? And what *is* it?
Bob 'rab' Bickford (rab) Mon 6 Aug 01 11:45
Good grief, don't pick that up, you don't know where it's been!
experience uncut Martha (madman) Mon 6 Aug 01 12:02
Hey, I know what that is! That's a, uh, um... what the hell is that thing?
Steve Martin (goldennokomis) Mon 6 Aug 01 12:32
You know, it's a... what is that thing?
Bob 'rab' Bickford (rab) Mon 6 Aug 01 13:37
(images of eucalyptus leaves come unbidden into your mind)
JaNell (goldennokomis) Mon 6 Aug 01 17:33
Oh, great, Bob, now my brain's itching, and how am I supposed to scratch in there?
Bob 'rab' Bickford (rab) Mon 6 Aug 01 17:44
(silently hands over the icepick, backs slowly away)
JaNell (goldennokomis) Mon 6 Aug 01 17:53
Oh, how sweet... but how'd y'all know I was a champion ice pick thrower?
Bob 'rab' Bickford (rab) Mon 6 Aug 01 18:00
(whispers more about the eucalyptus leaves)
JaNell (goldennokomis) Mon 6 Aug 01 18:05
Those eucalyptus leaves must be bothering you something awful... (transfers ice pick from throwing to operating position) Here, I'll get 'em out for you.
With catlike tread (sumac) Tue 7 Aug 01 11:48
This thing is *buzzing.* That's peculiar.
JaNell (goldennokomis) Tue 7 Aug 01 11:56
As in bzz...bzzz...bzzzzz...*KERSPLOOIE* ?
Bob 'rab' Bickford (rab) Tue 7 Aug 01 12:35
Naw, it's just ticking very very rapidly.
JaNell (goldennokomis) Tue 7 Aug 01 13:15
How can you hear it with a head full of euclalyptus leaves?
Bob 'rab' Bickford (rab) Tue 7 Aug 01 13:25
You removed them, remember? And I'm over the nosebleed you gave me.
JaNell (goldennokomis) Tue 7 Aug 01 15:28
(darkly, putting her "Egyptian Embalming for Dummies" book and crochet hook into her tool bag) And that ain't all...
Linda Castellani (castle) Tue 7 Aug 01 22:55
From the most recent issue of _Ansible_: _Lucy Sussex_ reports from Down Under on `a small marsupial called the Dibbler, rare, but saved from extinction. It's about the size of a large mouse with a bushy tail. One wonders if Terry Pratchett should contribute to their survival fund, given CMOT Dibbler in Discworld. However, one point of difference -- Dibblers belong to the antechinus family, which means they are famously sexually rapacious. The fact that at the end of the breeding season no males are left alive caused zoologists no end of puzzlement, until it was discovered that they'd gone without sleep and food in their sexual frenzy. Leaving a population of pregnant females....'

How funny. Like adolescent American boys... Luckily my 14 yr old is still more interested in Legos.
