There's this script copying them into the CMS for external display at
hourly intervals, for purposes of stability. So the logged-in
conversation may show a few responses not yet up for the external view.
Sometimes they are all in sync, sometimes there are a few that have
not yet been published to the outside.

Lisa slipped in.... was just going to confirm the date with some
quotes from
<http://www.amazon.com/Big-Girls-Dont-Cry-Everything/dp/1439150281>

“The startling intelligence and graceful prose of Rebecca Traister’s
coverage of American cultural politics has been one of journalism’s
best kept secrets during the past decade. With Big Girls Don’t Cry, she
claims her place as heir to the tradition of Mary McCarthy and Joan
Didion as she excavates the tectonic changes that lurked below the
surface of most election reporting and illuminates events in a manner
that will surprise political junkies and casual observers alike.” —Eric
Alterman, author of Why We’re Liberals

...etc, etc. This book has gotten a lot of critical acclaim.

Next month in Inkwell.vue, we will be interviewing Peter Weiss, about
his new book on Dan White and the murders of George Moscone and Harvey
Milk. The book is called "Double Play: The Hidden Passions Behind the
Double Assassination of George Moscone and Harvey Milk."

In his newly updated, award-winning book Double Play, reporter and
author Mike Weiss provides a masterful history and analysis of the
controversial trial that changed the California legal system — and
unveils secrets about Harvey Milk’s life and murder not available from
any other sources.

Weiss’s true crime thriller explains why White killed the two
politicians, and how he got away with murder, receiving only a mild
sentence for manslaughter. This newly expanded edition reveals how,
following his release from prison, White confessed his true murderous
intent and his plan to kill two more politicians. A companion DVD
provides television interviews and, for the first time ever, a
recording of White's confession.

Edgar Award-winner Mike Weiss covered the trial of Dan White and the
White Night riots for Time, Rolling Stone, and the Los Angeles Times.
He is the author of two other nonfiction books, Living Together and A
Very Good Year, as well as the acclaimed Ben Henry mystery series.
Weiss was raised in New York City, educated at Knox College and John
Hopkins University, and worked for many years as a reporter in San
Francisco.

That's a good question. But I look forward to reading the book. Weiss
is a great wordsmith, whom I met years ago in the City when he was
working on his first book, "Living Together." And, the book arrived
today.

I read it when it came out, though I think I didn't buy a copy, but
took it out of the library. I'm glad it has been republished. One of
the questions I'm going to be asking myself is, what (if anything) has
changed about the way I approached the killings and the trial. Back in
the day (and there are some very old posts on the WELL to prove it, I
felt this was a 19th Century killing that the 20th Century had no way
of understanding. This is a concept I sometimes use in my own work,
doing criminal appeals that can include murder or attempted murder.

Of course I also knew Dan White's lawyers, Doug Schmidt and Stephen
Scherr members of the group of neophytes that I bonded with in that
coffee shop in the Hall of Justice back in those days. Looking them up,
both seem to have retired (unlike me). Another member of our coffee
klatch was Martie Lurie, who after decades in the trial-court trenches
has achieved Nirvana as a beloved commentator on his beloved Giants.

From June 9-23, we'll be joined in Inkwell by Michael Scott Moore,
who'll be talking about his book "Sweetness and Blood: How Surfing
Spread from Hawaii and California to the Rest of the World, with Some
Unexpected Results." I'll be leading the discussion with Mike, an old
neighbor from Berlin, who works for Miller-McCune and Spiegel Online,
and has also published a novel, "Less than Nothing."

"Sweetness and Blood" looks at places where you'd never expect to find
surfing, like downtown Munich, the Gaza Strip, and Cuba, as well as
the one culture which has been surfing for some time with no input from
mainstream surfing. It's also a very smart travel book, because Mike
can't stop asking questions. It was named one of the books of the year
by the Economist last year, and if you want to find out why -- and
participate in the discussion -- just send me an e-mail to
captward@well.com and the first five lucky people will score.

In July we will be interviewing Victor Pickard, co-editor of "Will the
Last Reporter Please Turn Out the Lights: The Collapse of Journalism
and What Can Be Done to Fix It."

The book includes 32 new essays on the crisis of journalism in the
United States, written by leading scholars, journalists, activists and
policymakers. The essays cover a broad range of approaches to the
topic and viewpoints and offer an equally broad range of prospective
solutions. The pieces are all written since 2008 and mostly in 2010,
and include considerable ground-breaking research and analysis. A few
were published in magazines or journals, but most were commissioned
and written specifically for this volume.

"The indigenous practice of shamanism has been under siege for as long
as Western European societies have practiced colonialism and Christian
missionary work. Only very recently has there been a backlash
condemning the cultural chauvinism that labels indigenous shamanism
'primitive.' Increasingly, shaman-centered cultures are respected for
values of community, environmental consciousness, and first-hand
spiritual experience. What is not widely known is that Western
civilization itself, beneath layers of Christianity and industrialism,
stands upon its own, largely suppressed, shamanic and entheogenic
foundation. From the author of Pioneer of Inner Space."
