Your upcoming Dylan encyclopedia sounds like a real must-have for Dylan
scholars, Oliver. When do you expect it to be published?

and, though, hasn't the movie alread been made? because he was visual in
extremis.

i think if he were still with us he'd be lord dean of the exchequer in some
classics program and have a staff composed of brilliant co-ed beauties.

        Going way back to #s 43 & 58---Bob Dorough re Lord Buckley---Bob
promises to formulate a response sometime, but for now I'll quote him in a
Q. & A. session a friend of his and mine found somewhere on the 'net:

        Q.  "Something in your nature allows you to get along with difficult
characters like the hipsters--the Lenny Bruces and Lord Buckleys of the
world."

        A.  "I'm a soft, very adaptable guy quick to pick up on the feelings
of the other party.  So I was able to work with Lenny, Lord Buckley, and
Sugar Ray [Robinson], who was not an easy guy either.  I worked with Lord
Buckley, who was a trip.  It didn't matter who was playing in the bar when
he showed up.  He would bring in his retinue, act very lordly and take
over----'Play me some blues, Prince'."

        I won't go any further with this, Oliver, but I hope Bob will write
before this all closes down.

        But I do have another question for you.  Lord B is so cosmic and yet
so American, too. . . .are there in your mind any traceable European
influences, aside from the obvious British Dickens, Shakespeare, etc.?

        I'm thinking about Buckley's comment on the theater [notes to Hip
Aristocrat], that is a "very religious work.. . a work of
complete dedication. . . . a dangerous work."  To me, this is so avant garde
in the modern European sense. . . .one might consider Jarry's "Pere Ubu,"
the "theatre of cruelty," just about all the most famous of the "dangerous"
writers from modern Europe. . . .any thoughts on this, sweet Prince?

wow, i hope the saragossa adaptation gets made. had a blast finally
seeing it with <tnf>, <digaman>, and <normal> a few months back. now
i'm fondly remembering a night in new york with <danlevy> and levi
asher and briggs nisbet before, during, and after a meters gig at
tramps.
  

    
This won't necessarily close down, y'know. The "official" two-week period 
ends but the conversation can go on as long as people keep conversing. 
Some inkwell topics continue for years.

I'm curious to hear more about the Bob Dorough connection; last night in 
Santa Cruz, John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants told me and my son a 
little Bob Dorough story; and TMBG are opening their current show with a 
short, odd song sung by Dorough.
  

    
I'm a little strapped for time today and for the next few so I'll be
brief. No publisher, pub date (or deadline!) for the Dylan book though
my agent is beginning to shop it around. I'll try posting an entry when
I can but if you are familair with my Dead book, it is constructed
along those lines. And no, there are no juicy tidbits...I think I got
my juciy tidbit mojo working overtime in the Buckley book.

Wayne, that's a great question re: the European influence on B's work.
I really haven't given it that much but it occurs to me that there
might be something along the lines of what you suggest though I think
it may have been a sideways influence like stuff he picked up in
conversation rather than through reading or experience.

lot, and clearly there is still a lot to learn.

of you (and everybody else) will stick around for as long as you wish to
