Ya know, I probably didn't give the liner notes enough ink. There is some casual discussion of their style but little of their content. Certainly "11 Outlined Epitaphs" or "Some Other Kinds of Songs..." deserved its own, elonagted entry but it was almost like that was a separate book. And yes, those notes from the mid-'60s albums were like some kind of missing link or stepping stones between the beat and hippie movements. "Tarantula" can be seen as Dylan taking the liner note aesthetic into a longer form. And then, starting with "Blonde On Blonde," he pretty much abandoned that word canvas only to resusicate it with "World Gone Wrong." Again, "Chronicles" can be read as a long form version of less arty, yet "Another" side of Bob Dylan. [Read entire topic]

You probably already talked about this...but if not...have you discussed at all the impact all of Dylan's liner notes had on all of us, first coming up?

It was amazing...I lived for those notes, more than the songs, at first...it was like a free ticket to the "Beats" or something, poetry on the walls of a great coffee house...

He was the first person I was aware of to include poetry and art along with his music...I really haven't seen anyone do that since until Eddie Vedder and Peart Jam and a few others who were such rounded artists that the music was only a part of their 'art'...

Thanks for a great couple of weeks. Lets'c continue as things go. I'll check in every few days. In reviewing the posts, I'd like to send a shout out to my copy editor at WG. She, who wishes to remain semi-anonymous, really hunkered down with me last summer and helped pull every aspect of the book together down the home stretch. Really couldn't have done it without expertise and patience.

No one has mentioned the graphics in "Keys." I think they are pretty idiosyncratic. Any thoughts? [Read entire topic]
