I've proposed a session for the March 2011 SXSW conference, on the story of the first online newspaper/blog -- a remarkable precursor to a lot of common news/commentary sites on the web today.

FYI the conference happened last week. Thanks to generous support from Microsoft we were able to record the entire event in HD. The first of the official videos, covering the entire June 2 evening talks, is now up on YouTube and is worth watching. 90 mins.

PLATO's welcome page, Valentine's Day, 1975.

A tradition that began early in the 70s on PLATO, to customize the "welcome page" that every user would see when they signed on to PLATO. The page would be customized for various holidays and observances. Years later Google would do the same thing with its home page (as they're doing today as part of their Winter Olympics celebration).
