If I ever own a place, I'm going to start acquiring power tools. The year I
spent helping build some homes for Habitat was all sorts of fun--so I know
you're having a good time!

It's been great fun--and I plan to stick around. One of the reasons I
had for doing this interview was I figured it would help me get back
into the Well. (I gave it up cold turkey when I began working on this
series of books. Not enough time in the day.) Anyway, I'll check in
regularly--for insightful questions, random comments, or just plain old
chat. I'll be around--on Books, for sure; on sf; and I'm not sure
where else. Maybe the Gardening conference, when I find it. One of
the non-writing projects I have planned for the immediate post-novel
period is: I want to build a potting bench. That's a table in the
garden for repotting plants and such. After messing around with words
for so long, it's great to mess around with real stuff: boards and
nails and circular saws and drills. I have a great affection and a
healthy respect for power tools.

Linda--thank you for setting this up. I had a great time.
Martha--thank you for asking such great questions.
Everyone else--thanks for being here.

As Arnold said: I'll be back.

Over? How did that happen? Went by quick, didn't it. I'm still going to
re-read the book and try to come up with something probing and insightful.
Going to look for the last one, too, and maybe some more. Thanks, Pat.

Believe me, the pleasure has been ours! Thank you both; you are
welcome to continue for as long as you like. Pat Murphy has indicated
that she plans to continue to check the topic for any additional
questions, so if yours did not get answered, please post them here, or
e-mail from off-WELL to inkwell-hosts@well.com.

Time went so fast, but I guess the official interview is over!

Pat tells me she'll hang around for a bit if anyone has any questions that
haven't been answered, so feel free, guys.

Pat, thank you so much for being here and letting us all in on so much
interesting stuff! I know I speak for everyone when I say it's been a great
pleasure.

Hey, sex makes for a long conversation. Tolkien and sex makes for a
short one.

What's next? I plan to spend at least 3 months reading books rather
than writing them. (I'm open for suggestions for additions to my
reading list.) I'd like to finish a few short stories. Then I'll
figure out what's next. Right now, I have many possibilities, but I
haven't come close to settling on one.

You'd've thought the sex part of the conversation would have gone on longer
than that.

So, Pat, once you've wrestled the last book of this strange trilogy to the
ground, do you know what you're writing next?

Good point, Angus! You may be right about that. Max himself is not
terribly motivated by sex. Could be that his characters are simply
reflecting that.

        > When you get right down to it, sex just doesn't seem to be
> the motivator for Tolkien's characters. So I made a conscious
> decision to adopt this approach when I wrote There and Back Again.

The other thing, though, is that it may have been an unconscious
choice when Merriwell wrote it; that's your call.

so, you;re saying that TOlkein's characters are really Smurfs?
