Welcome to the conversation. This feed format is reversed from the

I got a stunning pair of links on the mideast political context
out of <news.> yesterday: Well worth passing along.

http://www.mapsofwar.com/ind/imperial-history.html

http://www.mapsofwar.com/ind/history-of-religion.html

And today at Salon Gary Kamiya, one of the long time Salon voices and a
staffer who never took an interest in hanging out in The WELL or at Salon
Table Talk posts about his take on the Salon "letters" feature appended to
all articles.

It's interesting. I cringe when he characterizes all the letters regulars
as "readers" because I think some are involved in a conversation, and see
themselves as writers in dialog. But the piercing of the veil of
publication is well described, in Gary's rich language. And the starred
(editor's choice) letters are fascinating too. Salon Letters has become a
place where people are anonymous (including some who sometimes have a more
fixed identity in Salon Table Talk or who write under their real names
here on The WELL) and sometimes quite articulate.

The question of volumn and of filtering -- bubbling up the good stuff --
and the question of how feedback changes writers are two issues we're just
seeing the start of.

One of the letter writers mentioned live performance as being a form where
the feedback is immediate and unfiltered. Well, sort of.

When I did live performance, some of my troupe would never read reviews,
though they were attentive to audience applause, laughter or
pacing-induced coughs. Several, like myself, were very shy people who
could take a risk on stage that they might not take in a conversation with
a friend. I don't think these layers of distance and or unexpected
intense familiarity are so simple or so new.

I'm sure we're all going to keep bumping up against them.

http://www.salon.com/opinion/kamiya/2007/01/30/writing

Bump!
