Using Older Email Methods on The WELL |
If your Complete Plan account was opened before November 6, 2009, you may be using an older method to pick up your mail. Please upgrade to the use new iris.well.com server whenever you are ready. Check out the email FAQ with help and information about the new email services. If you haven't upgraded your email services at no charge, here's help for older WELL email systems. Questions:How can I use The WELL's older Squirrelmail webmail to read my mail?
Answers: How can I use The WELL's older Squirrelmail webmail to read my mail? You can read your mail by logging in at the Squirrelmail page. It is not as modern (or mobile-compatible) as the newer webmail services powered by Zimbra, but you can see your mail with a Web browser using this method. How can I bring my mail directly to my computer? If you don't wish to upgrade to The WELL's new IMAP-compatible mail system at this time, you can still configure any POP (post office protocol) email program to retrieve your mail from The WELL's legacy server to your own computer.
To keep spammers from relaying through our legacy mail servers and to improve the mail servers' performance, we require authentication. This means that if you use smtp.well.com as your outgoing mailserver, in order to send mail, you will need to check for new mail first, wait 30 seconds, and then send any mail. Once you've done a check for new mail you are authenticated to send mail for 30 minutes. If you see a "Relaying Denied-authenticate with POP first" error message when trying to send email, simply pick up your mail before sending any with our SMTP server. (NOTE: This limitation does not apply to the new mail server, for those who upgrade). Some Internet Service Providers do not allow their customers to use an external SMTP server such as ours when you are in their network. If this is the case with your ISP, you must put their SMTP server in place of smtp.well.com in your mail program. Even if you do not have to use their outgoing mailserver, you may find it more convenient since you would not have to authenticate before sending outgoing email. How do I use Secure POP to get my mail? Secure POP encrypts your username and password when you connect to The WELL's mail servers. Recent versions of most mail program use secure POP, and we recommend that you upgrade your mail program if you don't see this setting. Set your mail program to receive your WELL mail using the instructions above. Then follow the appropriate instructions to use secure POP. How can I use a legacy UNIX mail program on The WELL to read my mail? You can use any ssh application to come to well.com, log in with your username and password, and then use a UNIX mail program. The supported program is called Pine, and you may find help for it on various sites, in the PicoSpan menu once you log in, or with the Pine Help command in Pine itself. Type pine at the OK prompt to open Pine, or use the WELL menu system to manage your email. If you do not see a menu when you connect, type set menus at the OK prompt. (After upgrading, you will still be able to sort old mail and send new mail with Pine and other legacy UNIX mailers, but you will no longer receive new email there.) Can I forward my legacy set-up email to another address? If you need to forward your mail to any other Internet mailbox, ssh to your WELL account, log in, press Return for menu and enter gomenu mailset to request the mailset menu, where you'll find a number of useful mail commands. Can I add more email addresses to my account? If you would like more email addresses at The WELL, use your login and password to sign up for an ExtraMail account. The new ExtraMail account will be in the new email system and server, not the legacy system. What can I do about spam? If you receive SPAM or unwanted commercial email at The WELL, please see Spam and SpamAssassin. How do I remove mail copies stuck on mail.well.com? If you receive mail from Helpdesk asking you to remove a large amount of mail from The WELL's legacy mail delivery server, please go to Removing Mail from The WELL's Mail Server for more information.
