Using Secure POP

Secure POP encrypts your username and password when you connect to The WELL's mail servers. You will need a fairly recent version of your mail program to use secure POP. Set your mail program to receive your mail using either the contemporary or legacy help page. Then follow the appropriate instructions below to use secure POP.

POP Mail programs for the Mac (OS X)

Eudora 6.1, 6.2
Mail.app 1.3.8, 1.3.9
Entourage
Mozilla Mail 1.7.2
Thunderbird 0.7

Eudora 6.1, 6.2

  1. Select Eudora/Preferences menu items
  2. Find and open the Personalities pane
  3. Select your WELL account personaility from the drop down list
  4. Set the mail server to mh.well.com
  5. Find and open the SSL pane
  6. Select your WELL account personaility from the drop down list
  7. Select "Required (Alternate Port)" from the "SSL for POP" drop-down.
  8. Click OK

Mail.app 1.3.8, 1.3.9

  1. Select Mail/Preferences menu items
  2. Select your WELL account from the Accounts list
  3. Set the Incoming Mail Server to mh.well.com
  4. Select the Advanced tab
  5. Down near the bottom of the dialog, check the "Use SSL" box
    (the port number should change to 995)
  6. Close the Accounts dialog

Entourage

  1. Select Tools/Accounts menu items
  2. Make sure the Mail tab is selected
  3. Double click your WELL account in the list that appears
  4. Set the POP server to mh.well.com
  5. Click the "Click here for advanced receiving options" button
  6. Check the "This POP service requires a secure connection (SSL)" box
    (the port number on the line below should change to 995)
  7. Click OK
  8. Close the Accounts dialog

Mozilla Mail 1.7.2

  1. Select Edit/Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings menu items
  2. Select Server Settings for your WELL account
  3. Set the POP server to mh.well.com
  4. Select "Use secure connection (SSL)"
  5. Verify that the Port is set to 995
  6. DO NOT check "Use secure authentication"
    (It refers to a challenge/response authentication method.)
  7. Click OK

Thunderbird 0.7

  1. Select Tools | Account Settings
  2. Select Server Settings under WELL
  3. Enter new server name mh.well.com in the first edit box
  4. Click checkbox: Use secure connection (SSL)
    (The port automatically updates to 995 when the box is checked.)
  5. DO NOT check "Use secure authentication"
  6. Click OK, dismiss incomprehensible error.
  7. Thunderbird requests password for "new" server. It assumes a password change.

  1. Right click your WELL account in the Personalities window and select Properties
  2. Select the Incoming Mail tab
  3. Set the Server to mh.well.com
  4. Select "Required, Alternate Port" in the drop down box titled "Secure Sockets when Receiving"
  5. Click OK

Outlook Express 6

  1. Select Tools/Accounts menu items
  2. Select the Mail tab
  3. Select the name you called your WELL account
  4. Click the Properties button
  5. Select the Servers Tab
  6. Enter mh.well.com as the "Incoming mail (POP3)" server
  7. Select the Advanced Tab
  8. Check the "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" box under the "Incoming mail (POP3)" line (the port number will change to 995)
  9. Click OK

Outlook 2000

  1. From the menu, select Tools, Accounts
  2. In the Mail tab, select your WELL account
  3. Click on the Properties button
  4. Click on the Servers tab. In "Incoming mail (POP3)", type mh.well.com
  5. DO NOT click on the box labeled "Log on using Secure Password Authentication"
  6. Click on the Advanced tab
  7. Under "Incoming Mail (POP3)" check the box labeled "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"
  8. Click OK

Mozilla Mail 1.7.2

POP Mail program for Linux and Unix

KDE Mail Client Kmail 1.6.2

  1. Under Settings, select Configure Kmail …
  2. Select the Network Icon in the left panel
  3. Click on the Receiving tab now in the right panel
  4. Select the entry for your WELL account
  5. Click on the Modify button at the right
  6. Under the General tab:
    • Change the Host to mh.well.com
    • Change the Port to 995
  7. Click the Extras tab
  8. Select the "Use SSL for mail download" radio button
    Alternatively, you can click the "Check what the server supports" button and it will fill in the "Use SSL for mail download".
  9. Click the OK button for the account modification
  10. Click the OK button for the KMail configure panel

The next time you access your WELL mail it will be using SSL on port 995.
