Inverted-A, Inc. was founded
in 1975 by Dr. Amnon Katz (1935-2000), a physicist
and aerospace engineer. The mission of the corporation was to push forward the
bounds of knowledge, both in the humanities and the sciences. Inverted-A
developed the first digital flight simulator for small aircraft, the Minisimulator IIC, at a time when the market was still
dominated by all analog devices.
At the same time, Inverted-A encouraged literary output from emerging writers by
starting a magazine entitled the Inverted-A
Horn. Known for its groundbreaking essays on social issues and the
well-crafted metrical poetry that it fosters, The Inverted-A Horn is currently on its 27th issue.
In October of 2000, Amnon Katz was killed while test-piloting an experimental
helicopter. Leadership over the corporation was transferred to his two
children, Aya Katz, then an
assistant professor of linguistics at Providence University, Taiwan, and Nets
Hawk Katz, currently an Associate Professor of mathematics at the University of
Indiana.
The focus of the research
department at Inverted-A has changed from aerospace engineering to cognitive
science. At the heart of our cognitive science
program is Project Bow, which follows the development of a cross-fostered male
chimpanzee as he acquires language and eventually literacy.
Born February 16, 2002, Bow
has been brought up in a human household since he was one month old. He is
exposed to three languages, Hebrew, English and Mandarin Chinese. Bow expresses
himself by means of lexigrams in the standard orthography of each of the test
languages. The eventual goal of the project is to test Bow’s capacity not only
for language but for literacy using standard keyboards.
