In humans, they are weakened/broken [franguntur] both by injury
and by the source of nature. And for that reason they acquire the third
gender, on the side of hermaphrodites and eunuchs.
The date tree bears fruit from the third year in Cyprus, from the fourth in Egypt and Syria, from the fifth year elsewhere, when they attain the height of a human being; the fruits do not have stones inside as long as they are young, for which reason they are given the designation "eunuchs."
