Who is Broadcast Engineering Services Of Bonny Doon?

A brief history of BESBD

Don Mussell, Consulting Engineer, got his first (paid) radio job at KPFK in Los Angeles in 1966. Passed the Third Class Radiotelephone test in 1967, and passed the First Class Radiotelephone test at the age of 19. Having learned the basics, he moved on to Carmel, California in 1970. Broadcast Engineering Services began as an informal contract engineering company in 1973. We assisted with contract engineering duties at KRML(AM) and KLRB(FM) in Carmel, and with the 1974 installation of KOCN in Pacific Grove, and KZEN in Seaside, California. An early complete installation job came in 1974 with the transmitter and antenna for KUSP in Santa Cruz, followed in 1975 with KDON(FM) in Salinas, California.

In 1977, after a year supervising the KSBW(TV) transmitter plant, he went on to found KAZU Radio in Pacific Grove, acting as manager and Chief Engineer. Hired as the primary University of California Santa Cruz campus electronic technician, rebuilt the cable television system, and added a number of new facilities and capabilities to the system. In 1980, he built the KZSC studio and transmitter facility at UCSC.

In 1984, Don moved to Whitesburg, Kentucky, to build the new radio station for Appalshop, WMMT. He became a charter member of NARTE in 1985, and also joined the SBE. In 1986, he went to New Orleans to help Ken Devine and Broadcast Technical, a contract engineering firm in the Crescent City. Returning to Virginia after a year, further installation and rebuilding of radio facilities throughout the US continued through the 1980's and early 1990's. In 1992, began primary engineering assistance for the new Cape and Islands stations at Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, WNAN and WCAI.

Returning to California in 1993, more projects were undertaken across the US., including construction of WVLS and WCHG in Virginia in 1995. The Pacifica Foundation became a primary client in 1995. In 1997, after two years of planning, construction of KKCR and KAQA in Hanalei, on the island of Kaua'i, was completed after a 4 month installation period.

He is currently working with 35 radio stations and groups throughout the United States, in collaboration with other broadcast engineers, developing new commercial and non-commercial facilities as well as maintaining existing facilities. He mostly works in mid-Pacific these days, has a house on Kaua`i, and would prefer to just stay put most of the time, unrealistic as that may be.

Did I mention how odd it is to write in third person?
