Coastways Christmas Tree Facts

          Coastways grows three kinds of Christmas Trees:
  • The Traditional Douglas Fir;
  • The fast-growing Monterey Pine;
  • The Sequoia Redwood
              The latter variety tends to develop into a "perfectly" shaped tree with little pruning. Most trees take much "convincing" (pruning) to get them to become properly shaped Christmas trees.
              Cultivation involves planting 1 to 2 year-old seedlings (grown in a commercial nursery) during the winter to replace those cut down during the Christmas season. They are left to grow on their own, with little more than seasonal rain to keep them irrigated. During their second year here at Coastways, pruning is begun. Pruning and shearing takes place several times per year thereafter to create their generally conical shape. The Monterey Pines are ready to sell during their 4th or 5th years. The Douglas Fir are ready during their 6th or 7th years, and the Sequoia Redwoods are ready during their 4th or 5th year. These trees are minimally fertilized, but they must often be sprayed 2 to 3 times a year to ward off mites and gall rust. The latter is a fungus infection common in Monterey Pines.
              Real, fresh-cut Christmas Trees are the safest kind for holiday decoration, except for a live tree in a pot. Fresh Trees are actually fire retardant! For extra safety, one should use the newer tiny-light strings as they give off the least amount of heat. Also, a fresh cut tree should be mounted and kept in a bucket of water for the entire holiday season. We have for sale tree stands that hold water.
