About mid-way up the Rohn-80 tower, the Arrow-shaped Shively 6500-1R (Serial Number 1) antenna is side-mounted to provide the extra directionalization needed to protect the NRAO observatory in nearby Green Bank, West Virginia.It looks like a hunting bow stuck to the tower, but it's actually a very effective directional broadcast antenna! This antenna delivers the most directional FM signal pattern in the United States (26.62 db null) for WVLS-FM, Monterey, Virginia. WVLS operates as a Class B1 station with 360 watts ERP from a height of over 4600 feet above sea level.
This antenna was installed by BESBD in 1995.
