Uruguay is peaceful, even sleepy, somewhat reminiscent of rural Italy. The almost somber atmosphere of Montevideo was a little eerie, perhaps ascribed to the controlled economy which stifles initiative and enterprise. Uruguay is notable for the many antique cars of all makes that are still in service. We also noticed large numbers of small black animals, perhaps Guinea pigs, darting in and out of the long grass by the roadside. They never seemed to be hit by cars, though.
