Boa Vista was a boomtown during the recent gold rush in Brazil near the Venezuelan border. The indigenous Yanomami peoples were being run off their lands by the garimpeiros (prospectors), until the Brazilian government stepped in to restore order. Mining supplies can still be had at this shop, though the garimpeiros have moved across the border into Venezuela and Guyana.
