It was cold in the cabin when we got home.
Gunter found an old sweater for his Father to put on.
It was too late to start a fire.
We talked about the performance.
What Sid had said afterwards, on the steps of the auditorium:
"I am concerned that the program that brought Nazi scientists to America
was named for the paperclip, the symbol of the effective Norwegian Resistance
that was so hated by the Nazis.
It is a pattern I am beginning to see, the theft of good symbols,
the malicious echoing of good deeds.
The Norwegian Resistance.." He paused as if unsure of how to continue.
"The Norwegian Resistance was a kind of civilian battle from within the country.
So rogue agents in the CIA and the military
brought over a thousand German war criminals to America. They placed them
throughout our country that had been instrumental in defeating Nazi Germany.
And they called it Operation Paperclip."
