In our minds the dark hooded figure at Mozart's door,
delivering a commission for a Requiem Mass.
The scenario is all too familiar.
Mozart's own work fingerprinted in his death.
The man who gave Mozart the commission for the Requiem Mass
was Count Walsegg, his name so suggestive
of the bird imagery and music in The Magic Flute.
And then the story that as he lay dying at age 36,
Mozart asked to have his beloved pet canary removed from the room
because the sound of its singing bothered him.
In my heart I know that Mozart was murdered.
When I hear his music, it is sometimes difficult not to cry.
Grief for the awful loss of his life,
Longing for the music he never wrote.
