Now, in the accelerated post-911 climate of surveillance
and acceptance of torture,
the echoes in own country are potent, I thought.
If we do not speak up, if we deny what is happening,
we will no longer lead free and honorable lives.
But we need to ask the question: how can we stop what is happening
in a peaceful way?
Violence begets violence. The events
that caused the Japanese to set in motion a war that would lead
to the destruction of their own country
are instructive as an example of what not to do.
How can we -- from the new generation
that came of age in World War II,
to the new generation that came of age when Kennedy was inaugurated
to the new generation that came of age in the shadow of 911 -
how can we fight back with information and democracy,
restore peace, and still preserve what we value
in our lives and our country?
