In the living room, Mabel and the other members
of a classical string quartet
were practicing the old fashioned waltzes
and the fast moving jitterbug tunes
that they now played at dances
where the men who had no idea where they were going
and when
and wounded veterans home from the war
danced with the women
who came to the East Bay to work in the war effort.
