In the Sixties, there were some in our government who thought that freedom of expression was a threat to this county's security. And in the dark corners of our military and espionage agencies, there were double agents who studied the methods of Total War. They took a system of covert attacks -- developed long ago by the Church to punish dissenters; by the Roman and British Empires to control their territories; by corporations to attack the right of working people to organize -- and they turned it on their own people. With this system, they attacked spiritual leaders. They attacked activists; they attacked Union members; they attacked artists; they attacked gay and lesbian people; they attacked strong women and people of color they attacked people whose ancestors had played key roles in the defeat of such evils as slavery and fascism. They even attacked men and women in their own armed forces. We ask for sanctuary
