Archie got up to get some food. He came back with barbecued chicken, tortillas, beans, and beer.
And then he began to talk nonstop about his work, a kind of sidewalk performance art
which he does by standing outside near the entrance to an event --
such as an opera or the opening of an exhibition --
at night usually, just as the crowd is arriving.
Slides, he told me, are projected on his body
by a device he rigged up which runs off the battery of his car.
He usually wears white,
and the images, which are photos and text,
are projected in a loop so that when the sequence is done,
it begins again.

"This continuous slide show on my body
is accompanied by a sound track
which emanates from a tape player in my car," he said.
