ART CENTER IS CLOWNING AROUND
2/1/2001
For the six weeks starting April 1, 2001, the Greenbelt Arts Center will have a rather unusual resident walking its halls and bumping into its walls. That's because Adam Gertsacov, boss clown, chief bottlewasher, and big cheese of the Acme Clown Company in Providence, RI will be bringing his big shoes and shiny red nose for an extended stay in Greenbelt, Maryland.
The Arts Center is hosting Gertsacov as part of a six week "Acme Clown Month" in which Gertsacov will teach workshops, perform shows, curate an art exhibit, host informal talks, show films, act in an official capacity as "Clown Laureate" of Greenbelt, and in general, make a fool out of himself.
Gertsacov is a graduate of numerous theatre and clown schools (including the Ringling Brothers Clown College, the Dellarte School of Physical Theatre, and master classes with many international clown luminaries. His bio states that he is one of the most educated clowns in America (barring certain elected officials) He's performed and taught all over the country and in Canada, Chile, and Brazil. Among the shows he'll perform in Greenbelt is his award winning Acme Miniature Circus, which is one of only a very few authentic Victorian style flea circuses in existence. DETAILS magazine called this show one of the top 10 alternative circuses in the country.
To find out more about the variety of clown activities taking place in Greenbelt, give the Arts Center a call at 301-441-8770, or visit them online at http://www.greenbelt.com/artscenter/

MARYLAND MAYOR NOT FOOLING AROUND
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
3/15/2001
On Sunday April 1, the mayor of Greenbelt Maryland Judith
"J" Davis will
inaugurate her latest political appointee to the Greenbelt team. It won't
be to the finance committee or to the board of elections. Instead,
Davis will name the city's first (and only) Clown Laureate.
That's right. Clown Laureate.
The first official Clown Laureate of Greenbelt is Adam Gertsacov, a 36
year old professional clown originally from Providence, RI. Gertsacov
is a graduate of the Ringling Brothers Clown College and the Dell'Arte
School of Physical theatre, among other places. He has also worked
around the world with distinguished clown luminaries such as Nobel Laureate Dario
Fo, MacArthur Fellow Bill Irwin, and Avner the Eccentric.
As the official Clown Laureate, Gertsacov will preside over and initiate
a wide variety of clown-related activities at the Greenbelt Arts Center as
part of a 6 week residency called Acme Clown Month. "It's a new and
improved month," says Gertsacov. "Its got 50% more weeks!"
Activities scheduled to take place during Acme Clown Month include
classes and workshops for adults and children, performances, a world premiere
puppet show, an art exhibit, talks, films, and other activities. Most
of the activities will take place at the Arts Center.
"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first and only Clown Laureate
progam in the United States," says Kim Kash, producer of the event for
the Arts Center. "We've gotten great response from the city, from our board,
and from our supporters.
The inauguration takes place Sunday April 1 as part of Artful Afternoons,
a family oriented festival on the Greenbelt Commons. At 4 pm, in front
of the Greenbelt Community Center, the Greenbelt Concert Band will play, and
Gertsacov will accept a large and ornate green belt from the
mayor.
"I'm very happy to participate in the Clown Laureate program," said Mayor
Davis. "Unique programs like this are part of what make Greenbelt such a
great place to live."
To find out more about Acme Clown Month and the new Clown Laureate, give
the Greenbelt Arts Center a call at 301-441-8770, or visit them online at
