Blue Roses Consulting offers writing, editorial consulting, and web content planning and provision.

As principal of Blue Roses, I have

  • produced, revised, and annotated world wide web sites, resources, documents, and support materials both online and in print, for vendors, services, and associations
  • participated in the creation, development, and teaching of various online courses
  • provided marketing and public relations consulting for those who serve the library market
  • created and written library documents, publications, and newsletters
  • reported on library events for professional listserv audiences and print media
  • worked as a developmental editor on book projects.

I teach online in a Rutgers SCILS program, and I have also worked on developing their online course for academic library paraprofessionals.

For the Pierpont Morgan Library, I wrote, edited, compiled, and revised various documents and help screens for the online catalog, CORSAIR.

For the Stanford - California State Library Institute on 21st Century Librarianship, August 2001, I wrote the four scenarios used for discussion .

For the Public Library Association, I produced a series of web-published Tech Notes on various subjects, from metadata to e-reference.

For the Association of Research Libraries, I wrote New Jobs for Old: Librarians Now published on ARL's web site. I have also produced a brochure and a brief on copyright (two pages culled from over 200), and two Transforming Libraries SPEC kits: After the User Survey, What Then? #226 and Service to Users with Disabilities #243.

I did an informal survey and analysis of the school library market for ALA TechSource, 2001-2002.

On the author interviews (formerly called Word Is Out) section of ALA Editions/Open Stacks, I produce interviews and analyses of ALA monograph publications, a glimpse of the person behind the book.

For the Tall Tree Initiative for Schools and Libraries, in Westchester County, New York, I wrote and edited sections of their newsletter, handbook, and reports, as well as providing content and consultation for their award-winning web site.

I offer presentations and workshops in how to write a press release, writing for publication, and about book reviewing.

For the Highlands Regional Library System, Chester, NJ, I provided analysis of content and navigation for their web site, suggestions for electronic communication via the site and via email, and a day of training staff.

For COSLA Roles and Functions of State Library Agencies, I revamped, rewrote, and revised the document.

For ICI (Information Conservation Inc./General Bookbinding Company), I wrote a content and navigation proposal for their web site.

I reviewed manuscripts for Neal Schuman Publishers and ALA Editions, wrote or revised press releases, created small PR programs, and review over 250 books a year for Booklist and Kirkus.

I am the editor of Literacy and Libraries: Learning from Case Studies, published by ALA, 2001.

I contributed to Ann Symons' Speaking Out! In Celebration of Intellectual Freedom (ALA, June 1999); and in various news and feature pieces on a freelance basis for American Libraries, like "Bibliographic Good vs. Evil in Buffy the Vampire Slayer," an examination of Giles, hero librarian in the WB television series, in American Libraries, September 1999, p44-47. An earlier version of this article, covering the first two seasons, appears in The Cybrarian's Manual 2, edited by Pat Ensor, American Library Association. The AL version is included in The Whole Library Handbook 3, edited by George Eberhart, also published by ALA.

This site has three of my recent presentations,
    Ten Graces for New Librarians,
    Words Are All We Have,
    and
The Architecture of Fire: Librarianship Transformed.
