of Weaving - 1st Avenida Sur 21 - study weaving. Has health food restaurant.
Chichicastenango: large market on stairs of Saint Thomas Church still burn

(Chimaltenango: Misco Viejo, large site, may be visited from here)
(Cobán: only accessible by air. Nearby are the caves of Laquin.)
(Flores: important archeological site situated on an island in Lake Petén
Itzá.)

Panajachel: beautiful little Indian town on the shores of Lake Atitilan
and a center for New Age nomads. Sulfur baths are nearby. In town is a used clothing
shop where old handwoven goods can be purchased cheaply.
(Petén region: Relatively inaccessible area with Mayan sites including
Calakmul (Mexico), Naranjo, Aquateca and Yaxchilán)
(Piedras Negras: has the finest examples of Mayan stone sculpture)
Quezaltenango: ancient highland community near an active volcano, Santa Maria.
Tucked away in the surrounding mountains are numerous accessible Indian villages,
each with its own particular vibration.

(Quirigua [keh ru ah]: highly imaginative hieroglyphics and stone stelae)
Santa Cruz de Quiché: isolated Indian village once the capital of the Maya
- Quiche empire. Ruins of Utatlán close by.
Santiago de Atitlán: Restaurant: La Luna, run by Guatemalan yogis. Can
direct you to an ashram called Kachina which provides friendly accomodation at
a reasonable rate.
(Tecpán: Iximché, ancient Mayan center of the Cakchiquel Indians
is a short distance away.)
Tikal: largest known Mayan site. Five huge temples stand as silent islands in
a sea of green. The jungle which covers most of the city provides refuge for a
variety of wildlife. Camping is permitted.
Uaxactun: (12 miles from Tikal) one of the longest-occupied Mayan cities. Wall
paintings from the sixth century and the oldest astronomical observatory.
(Zaculea: These partially-restored ruins can be reached from Huehuetenango.)
Zunil: Village where ancient rites still occasionally practiced. Nearby Zunil
Volcano is source of healing thermal walks.
