Mrs. Wilson's Children was a compilation album featuring a fairly undiscriminating selection of bands active in Kingston‑Upon‑Hull, East Yorkshire at the beginning of the 1980's.

Formed in 1979 and released a couple of singles during the early 80's. They signed to Beggars Banquet in 1984 and released the album ' Hope of Heaven' which led Sounds to describe them as the 'Great white hope' & the Melody maker 'The faces to watch in 85' |

I came in just after the "Mrs Wilson's Children" album came out, think the first thing i did was the single "when we cant make laughter stay" which was recorded in august 81. Ouch, my god, 24 years ago ! I like to think my "keys" helped turn them into bigger miserable basteds than they were lol ! Although i think its fair to say Mr Trynka and i didn't always see eye to eye over certain things i loved the guy and really thought he was quite a genius at what he did. I just never told him ! Trevor was as solid as a rock and a great calming influence. It was just a shame our youthful egos got in the way of the music we came up with, especially towards the end with the Factory / Peter Hook / New Order produced Les Disques Du Crepescule "Fate" 12 ". I had 3 or 4 great years with Mr Trynka and Mr Simpson. Best Hull band in the world ever and we knew it lol ! And to this day we are still the only people to get Pete to open Spiders on a SUNDAY ! The most successful band from Hornsea formed in 1979. They released two singles 'Contrix' and 'World In Action'. The latter was played to death by John Peel on Radio 1 th best band that never did...I LOVED the vets! Kari Kool, Thu, 23 Mar 2006 15:44:59 -0800 (PST): |

Originally the Special Guests, then the Defectors, in 2000, PeeJay and Pen-EE reconfigured themselves as The Sobs. Can't these two make up their minds what they want to call themselves? I remember pennie when she was in Mental Block/Section 60 doing her suzie meets Patti show while Nick Hunter in an old rainmac led the group into the face of chaos. Bestobel House is where I first saw them but pennie didn't join the 'ferriby crew' until after their Ferriby shows. The Hippies sneered and the punx were new and fun. Paul had already established himself as a drummer on the Hull scene and talked pennie into forming her own punk band and then the special guests were born when Airfix plugged in his AC30. I played with them for a little while and at the time we were the only band playing 'out of town' gigs. Leeds, Grimsby, York, Ripon, Bridlington and Goole. Recorded a 3 track vinyl single that is mentioned in the Independent Records Catalogue. There was another track on a scunthorpe based compilation' Household Shocks' called 'Your time is running out'. Mark Fell R.I.P. joined them in the closing year and then they became friendly with 'Everything but the Girl' and moved on to an electronic jazz fusion sound under the name 'Discobelisk'. I think all this is beyond sad, but weren't the London Boys basically a Cottingham band, featuring one Jon Driver, now I believe Professor Jonathan Driver?

Ringing guitar chords flash like lightning amid the maelstrom of thundering bass and drums. Shrieking and howling above the storm, Sharren's tortured vocals speak of the primal anguish and ecstasy of existence. Satisfaction Week, indeed!
[Legendary Radio 1 DJ] John Peel said that Cool To Snog was the best ...
band he had ever heard.
Satisfaction Week/Satisfaction Dub was released separately as an limited edition double-A side cassette.

L to R: Airfix (Drums), Kari Kool (Guitar), Sharren (Vox), Nauseous Nick (Bass)
At Cool To Snog's handful of live shows, the highlights of their
set were Satisfaction Week and an iconoclastic take on Falling
In Love Again, the tune made famous by Marlene Deitrich in the 1930 film,
Der Blaue Engel
Not long after recording Satisfaction Week for Mrs. Wilson's Children, Nauseous Nick packed a grip and split for the smoke, followed not long afterward by Kari Kool.
Do you remember that CND march to Wawne which stopped for speeches in Bransholme? As we came on to play a full on blizzard started. It was freezing, I couldn't even hold a plectrum and singer Sharren was crying with the cold. We quickly fled to the Swallow pub for medicinal brandies.

Remember a band called Cool to Snog, awful name but they were
pretty good. They used to do covers of Squeeze and Police and stuff like that

[Sons Of The Pope] were Hull's answer to The Fall with sicker humour, some great tunes in there and top lead guitar from Grot.
Vince C in the Hull Music Through The Decades Guestbook
I'd love to know whatever happened to Irene Blood! I know she married Grot from Sons of the Pope...but then what? Airfix went on to become a very sensible radiographer....Nick is doing this site...and I am a corporate media whore.....we all grow up eh?

Mrs. Wilson was the matriarch (manager? owner?) of the Wellington Club on Beverley Road, Hull, during the later 1970's and early 1980's. The Welly had long perfected a formula of cheap booze, live music, and no trouble which regularly attracted large crowds of students and dolies, local yokels, music fanatical kids, and the assorted residents of the surrounding low rent housing.
After Bestobel House was condemned as dangerous the concerts moved to the main hall of the Queens Garden College. The Venue was called 'The Block' and was opened with a Xmas Party in June played by 'The Bliss Beats' and 'Section 60'
A group of us who were students and general hangers on started "Alternative Ents" and brought groups such as 'Magazine', 'The Skids', 'The Dickies' and the Mekons to Hull. It was the first time that these small to middle groups had played in Hull since the Brick House had closed 10 years earlier.
After a few months the Students Union wanted to close us down and I scoured Hull for a venue where we could keep putting on touring bands alongside local ones. It was like trying to find a spare stable in Bethlehem lol.
When I approached Mrs Wilson she was not keen on filling her venue with Punck Rockers, she had read the papers but as I pleaded and begged (I'm not too proud) she eventually said " You'll have to speak to Harry (Shaw) about that" and that was as good as a yes so the Welly was reborn.
After we had to leave the welly Mrs Wilson became Mrs.Shaw. My favourite quote from Harry Shaw was when 'The Special A.K.A.' played with the 'Akrylic Vyktymz'. " Youll have to get more ov this ,the young ones love this Reggie (sic) music." Mrs Wilson banned Charlie Harper of the UKSubs from walking on the carpet when she barked " That carpet's not for walking on you know." omng she could stand up for herself and She has a top place in my heart forever.

I should mention the wonderful Sarah Woolmington, my then girlfriend, who was the only person I knew back then had an actual job, while people like me, Airfix, Carrie [Cool To Snog], Pennie & Paul [Defectors] and Tony just used to ‘hang out’, as I recall. It was Sarah who, when we ran short of money to press up Mrs Wilson’s Children, coughed up her hard-won cash, earned shovelling shit on a pig farm near Wawne. Without her the album would never have happened, and we owe you, Sarah.
