Some thoughts from Mr Serge Kubla,

A modest recovery seems to be underway, however, but by the time it has produced its effects many things will have changed. Europe will have been enlarged with some new members, the level of international competition will be higher than ever, and looking more locally, the Wallonie Region will have redesigned the development plans for its region. All of these will impact the Commune of Waterloo.

In addition, the development of Brussels, capital of Europe, will have overflow effects on all of Brabant Wallonie. It is likely therefore that an increase in demand for housing within our Commune will occur.

Furthermore, the Region of Wallonie wishes to designate our Commune as a Regional Development area, and this has many implications, which will require much profound discussion of how this is to be achieved.

This evolution of Waterloo could thus be taken as a sign of a dynamic commune, but merits being carefully controlled, which remains, as ever, one of our major preoccupations.

This is because a Commune can only live and prosper in the long term by finding an equilibrium between progress and the quality of life, - an area in which the presence of commerce forms an important part.

I hope therefore that everybody will contribute positively to these debates, which will inevitably occur.

More particularly, concerning commerce, - the focus of this booklet, it is necessary to continuously refine the total set of services available in order to preserve the attractive power of Waterloo. This effort can only have one goal - to serve you all better.
