Aqui Terme
Aqui Terme, some 20 minutes drive from our house in Cessole, is named
for the thermal springs that bubble up from the ground there. During
Victorian times, Aqui Terme was a busy spa resort for the wealthy, but
its popularity has declined.
In the main square of the old city stands a marble homage to the region's
hot springs. Look closely and you can see the steam rising from the
fountain at the base of the monument. The water rising from underground
streams surfaces at about 175 degrees F, and a faint smell of sulfur
permeates the air.
On this gray, damp day, the remnants of ancient Roman aquaducts on the
outskirts of Aqui Terme loom mysteriously in a misty shroud of fog.
