Celebration of Bergamo War Veterans
David and I were awakened after our first night in Agnello D'Oro by the
sound of brass bands. It seems the tiny plaza in front of our hotel was
the staging area for Bergamo's military veterans, who were preparing to
perform in the town square a couple blocks away. David and I quickly
dressed and scurried to the main plaza to witness the event.
Light rain did not daunt these military musicians, who raced around the
square madly, knees pumping high and brass instruments blaring, while
their leaders barked out orders.
One of the military units was a troop of men on ancient, rickety bicycles.
All the men wore elaborate feather headdresses attached to their helmets
that shimmered with gold and green highlights as they paraded about and
played their rousing military marches.
