In mid-October, I went to Maui for 10 days to rest, visit old friends
and spend my last evening there at Lahaina's Halloween festivities. I
took my camera, expecting to capture gorgeous views of towering
mountains and lush landscapes. But the day after I arrived, Maui was
innundated with vog -- volcanic smog -- which overtook the island. Why?
The usual trade winds stopped and the Kona winds blew the effluvia from the
island of Hawaii's active volcano northwestward to the other islands in the
chain. The result? A conversion layer that raised temperatures
and humidity, and limited visibility to a few miles. The trade winds
finally returned the day before I flew home.
