Live From the Great Western Ballroom Volume One

1997, GWB001

Comments

The Great Western Ballroom is a radio show hosted by Gabino Travassos on CJSR in Edmonton. Each hour-long show includes an interview with a band and a number of songs recorded in the CJSR studio. This CD consists mainly of songs, but also includes snippets from various interviews. It's listed here because it's the only CD available with music by the Mike McDonald Band. At a very early point in the band's history, before the band really meshed and felt comfortable with the new material, they played the show. The version of "Magic Powers" here isn't nearly as good as the version on the unreleased MMB CD, as I'm sure Mike would agree, but it's a moment of the band's history. Also worthy of note: songs by Luann Kowalek (like Mike, a member of the Bodkins), the Vinaigrettes (featuring Carolyn Mark and Ed Dobek), and Hookahman (including Larry Shelast, formerly of JGW, and Sherry Lee Heschel, formerly of MMB).

Track listing

Only songs, not interview excerpts, are listed above. Bands included among the interview excerpts: Jr. Gone Wild, Hookahman, and several others.
