Updated February 5, 1998

The Jr. Gone Wild experience lasted over a decade, and during those years quite a few people played with the band, some on the recordings, some live, some both. This page exists to provide information on all the people who were part of the Jr. Gone Wild experience over the years. If someone's missing from the list, or if you have some updated information on any of them, or if you are one of them, email me.

Mike McDonald

Mike is listed first instead of in alphabetical order like everyone else because he's the one constant, from the beginning of Jr. Gone Wild to the creation of the Mike McDonald Band. Mike's first band was Joey Did and the Necrophiliacs, later known as the Malibu Kens. In the mid-80s he was also part of the Dusty Chaps, who had a song or two on an It Came From Canada compilation album. ("Yukon Buddy" is fondly remembered.) Mike also appeared on Road Gore: The Band That Drank Too Much, the first album by Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra, back in 1986. He's done a lot of solo shows over the years as well as shows with MMB member Sherry-Lee Heschel. And, not long ago, he played bass for Hookahman, though he's no longer a member of that band. And if all that isn't enough, Mike and Hookahman's Jason Kodie have a project called Agent Bumbo. But wait! There's more! Mike and the other members of the Mike McDonald Band, Paul Paetz and Sherry-Lee Heschel, are also in a band called the Bodkins, along with Roland of Jerry Jerry fame, Anthony Pavlic of Captain Nemo (see below), and Luann Kowalek.

Mike has recorded a CD with the Mike McDonald Band, though it isn't yet available. He's also done some recording work with Blue Bill (a.k.a. Carolyn Mark; see below) and Painting Daises.

Update: for those who check this page first, the Mike McDonald Band broke up and reformed with a different lineup last year, and the album is on hold indefinitely. See the Mike News page for more.

Daniel Augustin

Daniel Augustin is one of several guest musicians on Simple Little Wish. He's also spent time drumming for Rockbottom.

Mark Brostrom

Mark Brostrom was one of the first four members of Jr. Gone Wild. Mike's Jr. Gone Wild History has some info on Mark and the beginning of the band.

Dave "Dove" Brown

Dove was a longtime member of the band, second only to Mike in his time served. He's also played bass for rockabilly band the Silver Bishops (featuring Henry Engels (of Idyl Tea), John Card (of SNFU and DOA), and Barry Lindel (of Darkroom, currently also with Gasoline Redhead).

Here are some excerpts from a SEE article by Clint Torangeau on the Silver Bishops (no longer available from SEE's website).

The Silver Bishops are a great band, not surprising given their royal lineage. The band includes Hank Engles and Dove, longtime bassists for two of Edmonton's most historic bands: Idyl Tea and Jr. Gone Wild, respectively. Also employed are Barry, formerly of Darkroom, and Seth (a.k.a. John Card), about whom Jerry once wrote a song.

Immediately, the band lived up to its potential. Revving up what they called "Dixie-fried C&W", they played with substance, attitude and style, without stooping to a Stray Cat caricature.

Unfortunately, Hank Engels has left Edmonton, leaving the future of the Silver Bishops in doubt. Some recorded material exists, but nothing has been released for sale.

Wes Borg reports that Sherry has stepped down as first string bassist for Hookahman, and has been replaced by Dove. Quoth Wes, "This means that Hookahman now contains the old Jr. Rhythm section... oh how strange the world is..."

Graham Brown

Graham Brown was another of the original four whose tale is told in Mike's History. In the '80s he had some success with his band Brilliant Orange. His current band is called Happy Man.

Ralph Alfonso adds,

And Graham Brown now plays guitar/bass/harmonica with me on the occasional live gigs and will be playing on my next CD

Chris Budnarchuk

Chris Budnarchuk is a guest musician on Folk You: The Guido Sessions. He also played with My Cat Julius, who released at least one cassette.

Ian Cook

Ian Cook played drums for Jr. for eight months following Ed Dobek's departure and before Larry Shelast's arrival. Though he didn't play on any Jr. albums, he toured with the band and appeared in one of their videos. His other past musical endeavours include the rockabilly band the Dollarbillies. Currently he's a member of Ottawa- based band Rustbucket. Here's some info on the band:

From: Brendan Boyle
Subject: Re: Jr. Gone Wild & Mike McDonald Band

Ian Cook, who played drums with Jr. for about a year is playing in our band here in Ottawa. We're called Rustbucket and have been together for just over a year. Our cd "Fourteen Beers and a Pack of Smokes" is due out at the end of May.

We played with Mike and the boys when they were in town at Barrymore's in the fall. It's kind of similar sounding stuff to Jr. Mike Carpenter is on bass, Joe Macdonald on acoustic and vocals, and me (Brendan Boyle) on electric guitar and vocals.

January '97 update: the CD's been released. It's called Fully Loaded. The band is hoping to have a home page up soon.

October '97 update: Rustbucket is now defunct, unfortunately. However, some members, including Ian, may continue as a new band, possibly a rockabilly combo.

Terry Cox

Terry Cox played guitar for eight months between the departure of Dave Lawson and the arrival of Steve Loree, circa 1988. He appears on Folk You: The Guido Sessions. He's now an occasional guitarist with Punched Unconscious.

Ed Dobek

Ed (Sparky the Happy Troll) Dobek was the drummer for Joey Did and the Necrophiliacs/Malibu Kens before Jr. was founded, and after Kim Upright left the fledgeling Jr. Gone Wild, Ed joined. He played on the albums Less Art, More Pop, Folk You: The Guido Sessions, and Too Dumb to Quit, writing a couple of songs as well as contributing drums and some vocals. He was also involved with Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra before Jerry left Edmonton for Montreal.

Ed was once a member of an Edmonton-based group called the Sun Gods, along with Ian Martin (see below). The group recorded a cassette but broke up, and Ed and Ian later started Evelyn Tremble, and then Ed left, and you can see the entry on Ian below for more info on the latter band.

More recently, Ed's been involved with a number of bands in B.C., including the Vinaigrettes. And The Wheat Chiefs. And the Metronome Cowboys.

The Wheat Chiefs recently released a new album, Redeemer. The Vinaigrettes also released a new album, Gross Negligee. For more on the Vinaigrettes, see the Carolyn Mark entry below.

May '97 update: Ed's no longer playing with the Vinaigrettes. He is, however, still a member of the Metronome Cowboys, the Wheat Chiefs, and the Timber Kings.

Jane Hawley

Jane Hawley is a country-oriented singer-songwriter-fiddler. She toured with Jr. circa 1991 and, more recently, was a guest musician on Simple Little Wish. She released her first solo album As We Walk on Thin Ice a few years ago. Over the last few years, she's performed as a solo act and as a member of Beautiful Joe. She recently recorded a second album with Jeff Bradshaw, Ross Watson, Tim Leacock, and Steve Pineo, produced by Danny Patton and Neil MacGonigill. (Thanks to the Calgary Herald's country music column by Peter North for some of this info.)

Jane was profiled recently by the Calgary weekly FFWD, in an article that discusses her second solo album, Letters to Myself, Beautiful Joe, and more.

See also the Beautiful Joe band bio from the Calgary Folk Music Festival page.

CanDisc has created a Jane Hawley Home Page, but it's not very informative.

Bill Henderson

Bill Henderson, who produced Too Dumb to Quit and is also credited as a guest musician on that album, was a member of the popular Canadian band Chilliwack in the '70s. More recently, he's performed with Shari Ulrich and Roy Forbes as UHF.

Hutty Bum Bo

Hutty Bum Bo is credited as a guest performer on Simple Little Wish. No one has seen him since he took off with the master tapes of HOOKAHMAN'S first album Oh Hut! seven months ago. Reported sightings of him around Michael Jackson's Wonderland proved inconclusive.

Lael Johnston

Lael Johnston is credited as a guest performer on Simple Little Wish. He was a member of Steve Loree's band Greyhound Tragedy. for some time.

Craig Korth

Craig Korth is credited as a guest performer on Simple Little Wish. He's the banjo player for Jerusalem Ridge.

Ev Laroi

Ev Laroi is a guest musician on Folk You: The Guido Sessions. He's currently performing solo, but he used to be in Idyl Tea, whose most recent release was a 1994 CD EP.

Dave Lawson

Dave Lawson was an early member of Jr. Gone Wild. He played guitar on Less Art, More Pop and also appears on some songs on Folk You: The Guido Sessions. At one point he was a member of Evelyn Tremble with Ian Martin and Ed Dobek. His current band is Hundred Acre Wood.

Anne Loree

Anne Loree joined Jr. as keyboardist after Simple Little Wish. She was one of the band during its final cross-Canada tour in the fall of 1995. More information about Anne and her solo career is available in the November '95 news update. Anne was a SOCAN award winner for writing the song "Insensitive," which became a hit for Jann Arden. Though the SOCAN site doesn't have much information, it does have a photo of her.

Lance Loree

Lance Loree was a guest musician on Too Dumb to Quit. A few years later, he took over the role of guitarist in the band, and he played on Simple Little Wish. Tom Hayden provides the following info:

I just received a CD called 'Strange Feelings' by The Alien Rebels, featuring Lance Loree on guitar. I'm just listening to it now, but it seems pretty decent in a subdued, non-discordant Captain Beefheart sort of way. Maybe akin to a less wacky Joe Hall and the Continental Drift...

It's a '96 release.

The address on the CD is

Alien Rebels
Suite 100-621 9th ave N.W.
Calgary, Alberta
T2N 1E3

Here's an email from Lance about the band:

Before and after my time with Jr. my project is The Alien Rebels, a southern Alberta rockabilly-country-surf band composed of guys with jobs and families. We released a CD in May called Strange Feelings. It would be useful to musicologists and weirdos with nothing better to do with themselves if you included that in your album list on the JR page.We have the beginnings of a homepage at: http://www.candisc.com/alien_rebels/

Steve Loree

(See the new Greyhound Tragedy home page for more information on Steve Loree's current project.)

Steve Loree had already made a name for himself in Edmonton prior to joining Jr. Gone Wild in time for Too Dumb to Quit. He played guitar, and wrote that album's song "Akit's Hill." Although he doesn't play on Simple Little Wish, the band recorded his song "Rain or Shine" for that album. Following his departure from Jr. he joined Deadbeat Backbone. Later, he formed Greyhound Tragedy, and has released several recordings with that band. The Plugged site has a good Greyhound Tragedy bio.

Greyhound Tragedy's latest CD, Demi Dog, is now available as an independent release.

January, 1998 update: Greyhound Tragedy is apparently on hiatus. Steve is working with Peter Arsenault, formerly of the Doughboys, and Casey Rolseth. The group, as of a couple months ago, was playing acoustic gigs and hadn't yet come up with a name, according to a SEE article.

Carolyn Mark

Carolyn Mark is a guest performer on Simple Little Wish. She's perhaps best known for her band, the Vinaigrettes. Mike adds, "Carolyn Mark was the female lead in JGW's Where The Hell Are You video (that's her pic with the lollypop at that link). She is an occasional member of the Show Business Giants (she sang and co-wrote on their brilliant album...see the song Ace + Joan, one of my faves), plays rhythm guitar and sings for the Metronome Cowboys, and is the beautiful and gracious proprietor of that Victoria institution Blue Bill's Hootenanny. Blue Bill is planning to record an album with Mike McDonald in the near future." As of the beginning of 1997, the CD has been recorded, but not yet manufactured and distributed.

The Vinaigrettes have released a cassette, Wing Night, a 1995 CD called Atta Boy Girl, and a new CD called Gross Negligee.

Carolyn recently reported that she has another band going, the Corn Sisters, which consists of herself and Maow drummer Neko Case. She is also one of a number of guest stars on the new album The Virginian by Neko Case and the Boyfriends, a country album that should be out by now on Mint Records.

Ian Martin

Ian Martin currently works for Cameron Guitars (a cool vintage and otherwise guitar shop in Edmonton), and is the guitarist for The Sherpas Of Love. He is also the road bassist for The Vinaigrettes. He's a guest performer on Too Dumb to Quit.

SEE Magazine has a profile of Ian, discussing Jr. Gone Wild, Ian's former band the Sun Gods, and his current band Evelyn Tremble.

Cameron Noyes

Cam Noyes played bass briefly in an early incarnation of Jr.; see Mike's History for more details.

He writes:

I left really quickly (The Lawson, Sinatra, Upright, version) to play with my good friends who had a band apropriately called A:Noyes, after that I promoted gigs, managed tours and wrote grant proposals and articles and still do.

I am a feature member of the soon to be released Rhinosorceress with Sparky Vegas and played Bass with Zolty Cracker in once in Amsterdam. I have worked involved with literally hundreds of bands in varying capacities.

Paul (Duke) Paetz

Currently a member of the Mike McDonald Band, Paul Paetz has been a member of Jr. Gone Wild (appearing on Folk You: The Guido Sessions) and Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra (circa Battle Hymn of the Apartment), among others. He is, I'm told, also a Bodkin.

Anthony Pavlic

Anthony Pavlic is credited as a guest performer on Simple Little Wish. He's the guitarist for Captain Nemo, and is also one of the Bodkins. Here are some excerpts from Capt. Nemo's press kit:

Capt. Nemo: Greg Ferguson-drums/ Raj Nigam-percussion/ Anthony Pavlic-guitar/ Rod West-bass/ Angus Wyatt-vocals...formed in the fall of 1992.

RECORDINGS: Galvanism! - a ten song cassette released Dec. 1993. Recorded at Monster Tracks Audio Projects/ produced by Dave Mockford (cat. #:QC20000)

Hooked on Mnemonics - a 16 song cd released May, 1995. Recorded at Beta Sound Studios/ produced by Rick Fenton (cat. #:RPCD04)

Style: Capt. Nemo writes short percussion driven, groove oriented guitar rock/pop songs in the alternative vein based on observances of familiar objects, places, stories, and situations. Capt. Nemo are on RAGING POSTMAN Records: box 206, Edmonton, Alta. T5J-2L8

Bernice Pelletier

Bernice Pelletier was an occasional member of Jr. Gone Wild, often touring with the band and singing on Folk You: The Guido Sessions and Too Dumb to Quit. Mike adds, she "was a full fledged member of JGW for at least two years. Like Lance, she guested on Too Dumb, joining the band a couple years later. She is currently involved in maternal pursuits.

Bernice adds:

Just to get the 411 straight on me and mine: I sang not only on "Folk You" and "Too Dumb" (which was dedicated to my daughter Justine since I travelled to the Pike Lake, Sask recording studios when I was eight months pregnant) but also on "Simple Little Wish." I was a full-fledged band member at the time of that last recording but had departed the band just prior to its release. That means I appeared on 3 out of 5 JGW releases -- not to mention the JGW/Trolls "Hyperbole" release.... I was one of the original members of The Bodkins but adjusting to single parenthood kinda pulled me out of that one.

She also sang on the CD Snapperhead by Deadbeat Backbone, and on the original demo version of the first Greyhound Tragedy album. (Gosh, would I like to hear that....)

Ford Pier

Ford Pier played keyboards on Too Dumb to Quit and Simple Little Wish, and contributed a couple of songs as well. Since leaving the band he's been remarkably busy. He joined Roots Roundup for awhile, but more recently has been a member of Show Business Giants and Canadian punk legends D.O.A.. He also recorded a solo album, Meconium.

Ford was interviewed by CITR's Discorder last year.

May '97 update: Ford reports that he's no longer with D.O.A., and he's working on his second solo album. He's also been seen across the country playing in Veda Hille's band.

Chris Read

Chris Read is a guest musician on Folk You: The Guido Sessions.

Kathryn Rose

Kathryn Rose sang on Pull the Goalie. Scott Dobson provided the following information on what she's been up to:

Very attentive Jr. fans will remember Kathryn Rose as the 11th hour addition to the "Pull the Goalie" tour, to reprise her backing vocals from the same album. She joined the hapless but hardy boys in the late fall of '92 and braved the forbidding Canadian highways in their cantankerous red van for three and a half months. She appeared in the video for "Rhythm Of The Rain".

Kathryn is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter, who for ten years has been balancing a long list of guest vocals with personal band projects. From 1990-1995 she was a member of the acoustic pop band Wind May Do Damage. Last spring she went solo and a debut album is in the works, to be produced by Vancouverite David Kershaw (Wild Strawberries, Dust Radio). Look for it summer '96.

And if you want cheap laughs check out National Lampoon's "Senior Trip" where you can see Kathryn acting out teen hijinks she never had as stoned and confused Wanda Baker.

Wind May Do Damage "The Binds Of Blood" can be found in the indie section of Sams and HMV (FLDCD02), or ordered from Amatish Music (905-294-9618). Music, Bio, and video can be searched via "DIRT", the internet cyberstore.

The April 1997 issue of Chart magazine has a review of Kathryn's new album, Every Lurid Detail (Footlodgedindoor Music, P.O. Box 197, 260 Adelaide St E., Toronto ON M5A 1N1). Reviewer John Teshima says, "... it is a dandy. Rose shows off her versatility, veering from soothing soul ("My Smoky Shirt"), to breathy pop ("On a Night Like This"). But her best work is in the dark and brooding numbers that allow her to make the most of her gorgeous, smoky voice..."

There's a Kathryn Rose page at http://genxgroup.com/rose.htm, if you can find it through the ads that take up a lot of the screen. Or try http://www.interlog.com/~cpreal/coma/k_rose_store.html, or http://www.musicmedianetwork.com/rose.html.

Larry Shelast

Larry Shelast was Jr.'s drummer for the band's last several years. He played on Pull the Goalie and Simple Little Wish. He's currently drumming for Hookahman.

Chris Smith

Chris Smith played guitar (pedal steel and electric) for Jr., appearing on Pull the Goalie. In 1995 he released a cassette called Wait and See Cafe, but of late he's concentrating more of his energies on his band, the Piemyn. (Thanks to Roger Levesque's 1995 article on Chris from the Edmonton Journal.) Troy Lissoway adds to the story:

here's some info on what chris smith is up to. in December of 95 his band, the Piemyn, released their debut cd "picasso laughed". The Piemyn consist of Chris on lead vocals and guitar, Jason Cairns on bass, and Ryan Vikadel on drums. The group blends influences such as blues, jazz, country, folk and funk to arrive at their own unique rock sound. The Piemyn are quickly becoming favourites on the Edmonton scene, and should be touring this spring. They have strong connections with many other bands (of course), and are becoming notorious for their "Hookahpie" performances with Hookahman, which result in 12 musicians on stage playing songs from both groups. Here are the tracks from Picasso Laughed (not in proper order, since I don't have the cd in front of me):

Picasso Laughed
This is It
Wait and See Cafe
180
Manhattan Girl
Dead Dog Blues
Rome
No Truth
1000 Miles to Go (mike mcdonald sings backup-can also be found on "pull the goalie")
She Waits
Follow the Sun
Faith

It should also be noted that at the time of the recording, John Navaratnam was the band's conga-and-other-percussion player, but he quit due to school.

February 1997 update: the Piemyn have broken up.

Chris has been remarkably busy. He's appeared on recent CDs by Luann Kowalek, Terry Morrison, and Scott Wicken.

Tucker Flats Jug Huggers

Tucker Flats Jug Huggers are guest performers on Folk You: The Guido Sessions.

Kim Upright

Kim Upright, along with Graham Brown, Mark Brostrom, and Mike McDonald, was one of the first four members of Jr. Gone Wild. To learn more about those days, and the original four, check out Mike's Jr. Gone Wild History.
