It's the tenth anniversary of Star Trek, the biggest science fiction phenomenon of all time! Forget Planet of the Apes, Logan's Run, and Space: 1999... 1976 is the trektennial of Star Trek! And what a year it is! Books, comics, magazines, and more! And yes, there will be a Star Trek movie! After years of waiting, Star Trek is being revived...
again! Not as an animated series, but as an actual motion picture. Meanwhile,
live from New York, it's Saturday
Night!
1976 is a big year for books. Three more of Alan Dean Foster's Star
Trek Log books... and starting with Star Trek Log Seven, it's one episode per
book, as Foster turns a half hour animated episode into a full length novel,
with plenty of all new action and adventure! Meanwhile, though Bantam's
Star Trek adaptations seem to be on hold since the untimely death last
year of James Blish, they've found a couple of exciting new ways to get
us into the bookstores: a collection of short stories, some entirely new
and some only ever published in fanzines, and an all new, original Star
Trek novel, the first one in six years (remember Spock
Must Die?)... could
more be on the way?
1976 brings the premiere issues of three magazines for the Star
Trek fan.
One, Starlog, covers other SF TV series and movies (the
second issue's cover story is on Space: 1999). The other
two are strictly for Star
Trek fans. All About Star Trek Fan Clubs Magazine (not
the catchiest title) has produced one issue so far, and though it's not nearly
as glossy as Starlog it may
still grow into something interesting. Better
yet is the Star Trek Giant Poster Book, which has four
1976 issues and more on the way for 1977.
Gold Key continues telling new adventures of the Enterprise crew
in comic book form. The stories and art could be more impressive (especially
considering
the competition these days from Marvel's 2001 and Logan's
Run comics, not
to mention their original War of the Worlds sequel series
about the character Killraven). Still, there's no denying the Gold Key comics
have improved
considerably from their earliest efforts. Speaking of which, if you haven't
read them, now you have the chance, thanks to Gold Key's Enterprise
Logs reprint
books.
Remember the book and record sets that came out last year? Power Records
has rereleased a couple of the stories on a 12" LP this year, complete
with larger reprints of the comic-format stories. Okay, I'll admit that
the
voices
don't sound
anything
like the actual cast of Star Trek, and the stories aren't
as good as they could be. The big story of the year, though, is Gene
Roddenberry: Inside Star Trek. You're a Star Trek fan and your home doesn't have enough Star
Trek stuff?
You've already got models, action figures, and posters. Well, there's a lot
more. Toys, puzzles, and the first set of Star Trek trading
cards since the series went off the air. And don't forget to check the
Trektennial
catalog,
complete with
all kinds of goodies from Star Trek... and some of Gene
Roddenberry's other creations. Where do you go from here? The Star Trek Welcommittee!
Whether you're looking for pen pals, or fan clubs, or fanzines,
this is the place to go. All of Star Trek fandom in a few pages packed
with information.
