1976 brings the premiere issues of three magazines for the Star Trek fan. One, Starlog, covers other SF TV series and movies (the second issue's cover story is on Space: 1999). The other two are strictly for Star Trek fans.

The Star Trek Giant Poster Book has published four 1976 issues with more on the way for 1977. When you see it on the newsstand, it looks like a magazine... but instead of being stapled, it's folded, and as you unfold it you find more articles and then, when it's fully open, a full size, full color poster on the other side. The articles are by Doug Drexler and Allan Asherman. This appears to be an officially authorized publication.

There's only been one issue so far of this one, and it's as much of a directory as it is a magazine. There's an emphasis on listings of fan clubs as well as articles. But there are photos and other illustrations, and though it's not nearly as glossy as Starlog there's some interesting potential in a magazine that focuses on fandom itself. This does not appear to be an official or authorized magazine, but it has newsstand distribution, so it's not a fanzine, either. This issue has info on the stars of the series, an episode guide, and listings for a number of fan clubs. The most interesting bit, though, is a photo gallery from the Federation Trading Post, a store in New York City that sells nothing but Star Trek stuff.

Starlog is not a Star Trek magazine, it's a science fiction TV and movie magazine that has a lot of Star Trek coverage. There's both historical information and late-breaking news (allowing for a magazine's publication lead time) to be found here. Among the tidbits in the first three issues: information on who's been working on screenplays for the Star Trek movie, news that the Great Bird of the Galaxy himself is reworking one of his rejected movie ideas as a Star Trek novel, and more. Starlog also covers classic science fiction and the popular SF of today: Space: 1999, Logan's Run, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, plus comics, soundtracks, and more.
