My trip was taken from August 5-19 2001, as part of Earthwatch's "Carnivores of Madagascar" expedition. Earthwatch is an organization that connects tourists who want to have an interesting vacation with research projects that need warm bodies. We pay for the privilege of working our butts off for the researchers, thereby providing them with both funding and enthusiastic workers. In exchange, we get an adventure vacation and the knowledge that we're aiding a good cause.

There's two ways to view this site: Chronological and Photos. The chronological pages follow my trip over time, and contain my narrative (taken largely from the journal I kept) as well as selected photos that cover all of the general points and subjects of interest. The photo pages are a complete set of the photos on the site, with brief captions and explanatory notes.

Chronological pages: August 5-7 August 8 part 1 August 8 part 2 August 9 August 10 August 11-12 August 13 August 14-17 August 18 part 1 August 18-19

If you enjoy this recounting of my trip, consider joining an Earthwatch expedition yourself. They have a wide variety of expeditions available, in every part of the world. If my experience is anything close to typical, you'll never have a more unusual or rewarding vacation.
