The Electronic Library
What should a library provide?
- Databases? Records, Tapes, and CDs?
- Competition between the public and private sector?
What are some benefits of 'The Electronic Library'?
- Cheaper to Acquire many new materials
- more up to date- rather than 5 year old books, 2 day
old articles
- more interactive- can find information faster
- more kinds of information
What are some problems with the 'Electronic Library"
- Private information can be withdrawn- deleting old 'journals'
- Need of a 'filter' for some audiences- no librarian to
choose what's appropriate.
- No librarian to teach how to use equipment
- No librarian to assess just who user is and might need
- Information might not be the right information
- Hypertext 'books' and access- but can people follow linear
argument?
- Electronic resource addiction- is this a problem?
- Do producers get paid? Electronic information is promiscuous
