Proto-Culture

• Develop the new rather than critisize the old; 'just do it'
• Love of experiment, the unexpected;
• Enter the New Age and serve as an example for those that follow
• Problem- not as self-critical; prejudice can continue; sappy
• Virtue- visionary
• Example- Hippy Culture; setting up communes

Counter Culture

• Criticize the failings of the old unrelentingly
• Love of experiment that is in the face of the Old System
• Problem- ultimately bound to sustain values of the Old System; can't break out of the old system; can become self-destructive in that critique is sustained by negativity
• Virtue- powerful
• Example- Punk Culture; expose the hypocrisy of the old

Mainstream Culture

• Appropriate what works from the proto or counter cultures.
• Trumpet the virtues of the status quo by either minimizing negative consequences or blaming someone else.
• Problem- Well, problems go unanswered, creativity is to be 'managed.' They define 'normal.'
• Virtue- continuity, stability
• Example- mainstream politics, mainstream media culture.
