Cultural Frontiers
Proto-Culture
- Develop the new rather than critisize the old; 'just
do it'
- Love of experiment, the unexpected;
- Enter the New Age and serve as an example for those that
follow
- Problem- not as self-critical; prejudice can continue;
sappy
- Virtue- visionary
- Example- Hippy Culture; setting up communes
Counter Culture
- Criticize the failings of the old unrelentingly
- Love of experiment that is in the face of the Old System
- Problem- ultimately bound to sustain values of the Old
System; can't break out of the old system; can become self-destructive
in that critique is sustained by negativity
- Virtue- powerful
- Example- Punk Culture; expose the hypocrisy of the old
Mainstream Culture
- Appropriate what works from the proto or counter cultures.
- Trumpet the virtues of the status quo by either
minimizing negative consequences or blaming someone else.
- Problem- Well, problems go unanswered, creativity is
to be 'managed.' They define 'normal.'
- Virtue- continuity, stability
- Example- mainstream politics, mainstream media culture.
