What's New - February 1, 1997
CASA OnlineThe Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, aka CASA web site is online. The announcement notes that "the site is a resource for research on addiction and substance abuse. It provides access to information, research and commentary on tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse issues including prevention, treatment and cost data." Wow, what more could you need (in addition to the Web of Addictions, of course!)?
New Information DatabaseHans Olav Fekjaer, MD reports the availability of a new list of links for alcohol and other drug research databases on the Web. Check out the ETOH Database and let Dr Fekjaer know what you think of it.
ICAAThe International Council on Alcohol and Addictions Web site has been redone and is up and running. Site includes news briefs, documents and publications - also a history of the organization, information on the benefits of joining and an application form. Monthly updates are made available so it will be worth a bookmark! Thanks to Howard Lotsof for this information.
Dr. Brown's Home Drug Test Debuts
Now you can drug test your kids in the privacy of your own home. Arguments in favor of this new product include ease of use and peace of mind for parents. In opposition are the possibilities of misuse (!), impairment of trust relationships with your kids, danger of acting on false positives. What do you think? The WOA will collect comments for the next month and reprint all are part of those we feel are the most erudite next month. Send in your opinion - put "Dr. Brown" on the subject line.

Home PC Magazine has selected the Web of Addictions site as one of the top 500 on the Web! "We judged sites on their design, interactivity, creativity, and most important - depth of content." Thanks to editor Ellen Pearlman and the staff of Home PC for this recognition.
Jes Shahari has notified us that "the sites I feel really touch the hearts of other in the way they present themselves and help out" are chosen to receive the Five Hearts Award. We thank Jes for this award, and suggest you check out all of the mental health related information at Jes' site.
Web of Addictions on CD Textbook
Kelli McCormack Brown from the University of South Florida College of Public Health has informed us that the Web of Addictions has been selected for inclusion in the text and accompanying CD-ROM of a new textbook, to be published in March of this year. The integrated package titled "The Essentials for Health and Wellness" is the latest edition of a text which has been used by tens of thousands of students in hundreds of classrooms. The inclusion of the CD-ROM and exemplary web sites will allow teachers to demonstrate the utility of the internet, and to take advantage of the new ways students learn today. For more information, see the online site of the publisher, Jones and Bartlett or call them at 800.832.0034.
New Archiving Approach
Beginning this month, the Web of Addiction will archive these "What's New Pages" by date. Our "Previous" section will provide links to the full content of each page. We believe this will allow for easier navigation without loss of content.
Project MATCH - UpdateRead the official NIAAA press release on the results of Project MATCH. Unfortunately, the results of this study are not available online. Be sure to read the article in the January 1997 issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol.
