I
try to do a little yoga each day. This forward bend pose has
been great for correcting my scoliosis by stretching out the
concave side of my spinal curvature.

About
Me
My hobbies are yoga,
reading books, eating healthy and trying to live simply and frugally.
I get torn when I see the cheap prices of food at Sam's Club and
Costco, but I end up really trying to hold out to buy mainly organic
food for my family. It is expensive, but hopefully worth it. At
least I have a Trader Joe's near my house. I stopped shopping at
Whole Foods because of the expense and the fact that Trader Joe's
and the local supermarkets are now stocking lots of organic foods.
My neighbor calls Whole Foods "whole paycheck" because
the prices are so high.

Recovering
from a Connective Tissue Disorder
Each morning I try to
make a big pot of soup with organic meats, beans and vegetable in
the crock pot. I let that simmer all day and snack on it when I'm
hungry. I've found this really helps my fibromyalgia.
When I was younger I thought I was eating healthy, but I think in
hindsight I was eating too many carbs, not enough meat (for me)
and not enough fat. I'm not against vegetarian diets. If they work
for other people - that's great. But for me it just wasn't;t working
out. Healthwise I hung in there until I had children. After having
two children close together my health really went down hill. I think
I was nutritionally depleted. If I had to do it over again I would
have changed my diet and had my children at least four years apart
to give my body time to recover.
The kids were sick a
lot, too, even though we were supposedly on a healthy, semi-vegetarian
diet. I went to many doctors and found few if any answers. Eventually
I was diagnosed with an inherited connective
tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This diagnosis
provided a reason for my many diverse symptoms, such as scoliosis,
fibromyalgia, frozen shoulder, neck pain and TMJ (temporomandibular
joint syndrome), but few solutions. Eventually I found a physical
therapist who helped me a lot, and also found many answers on my
own through my collection of alternative health books. The main
things that helped me were yoga, changing my diet and trigger point
therapy.
Acid
- Base Balance
One of the most interesting
lessons I learnd from my alternative health books was to monitor
the acid
- base balance of my body. It is interesting that this is something
the average doctor doesn't seem to pay any attention to, yet there
are many medical studies validating the need for humans to have
a proper pH balance by eating
more acid or alkaline forming foods as needed. I think The Paleodiet
book by Loren Cordain is really interesting. Dr. Cordain advocates
a caveman diet of mainly meat and vegetables. He doesn;t even think
beans or tubers are good to eat. I'm not sure that would be the
best diet for me because it is very high in meat. Dr. Cordain thinks
this is okay because our ancestors ate a lot of meat. But our ancestors
didn't sit at a desk typing all day for a living either. So even
though I may have the same genes as a cave woman I sure don't have
the same activity level. Read more about my
thoughts on acid and alkaline foods.
Love
of Books
I got interested in alternative
health after frequent visits to our local health food store's small
collection of holistic health books. Over the years I realized that
I was starting to find more and more answers to my health issues
there instead of with traditional health care providers. These days
I have a bigger collection of alternative health books that the
local health food store. A blissful day to me is going to a library
book sale. I also like to spend some time browsing at our local
Half Price Bookstore. I had to stop buying the used books because
of a family member’s dust and mold allergies, but they often have
brand new books there, too, at great prices.
Exercise
- It Does a Body Good
For exercise I like to
hike, ride my bike and do yoga. My body still isn't "normal" by
any means. I go into spasms any time I try to lift weights, for
example. But these days I'm out of daily chronic pain and can work
full time again, which for me is a major accomplishment. Plus I
can still hike, bike and do yoga for exercise, which is more than
many people my age do anyway. My favorite exercise lately is my
mini-trampoline.
