The
Genesis
distributed alife evolution home page by David
Stern, with a neat java stand alone applet and
a way to join in distributed cooperative
evolution of the little bugs that are the
evolvees, similar in concept to seti@home.
Tom Ray, inventor of
Tierra,
has a cute daughter visible on his

in Japan, but, hey, he's all over the world, or
at least the Japan, Oklahoma, and Costa Rica
parts. And how many other folks can get
Freeman Dyson to take a picture of their kid?

Bitozoa
and
Bitozoa2
are both worth downloading for MS-Windows
systems. The first one is an herbivores versus
plants evolution simulation with simple visual
interface (dots, mostly) but great stuff
happening behind it: neural nets, evolution,
lots of parameters with which to play, blind or
sighted organisms, a history graph, and so
forth. The second one adds carnivores to the
mix, creating a coevolution system that can be
run sometimes for weeks with new behaviors
evolving. I like to try both with slower
mutation and more complex neural networks and
see what happens. Turning off asexual
reproduction will either kill off a population
in the worst case, or help much more
interesting behavior evolve in the best case.

Nice, beautiful really, but
shareware
for something so CPU hungry that it barely
functions on a modern desktop workstation?

This is an essential source document on
artificial life, proceedings of a first
conference that is still ongoing as a series a
decade later, but it is out of print, only to
be found via used book dealers.

Alife AI since January 2000. This is a fairly
controversial effort, mainly because most folks
think the author doesn't have the needed skill,
but talks a good story. We'll see.
Complexity-Seeking Ants
A more complex variant on the emergent behavior
embodied in the StarLogo demo TERMiTES. Sadly,
it has suffered bit rot, and all the figures
are missing, and it also lacks a demo, which a
version written in the age of Java would have.
A good read, but quite old.
