"Ruck" is a perfectly good Anglo-Saxon word meaning "jumble", it also imitates the sound of "truck". The "dolly" is also variously called a "truck dolly", a "furniture dolly" or a "two wheeled cart", it is the gadget the moving crew uses to move stacks of boxes into or out of the moving van.
I drew this for Markian Gooley; might as well share so others can imitate it; sincere sympathies to those of you who have no way to view this in fixed pitch text; complain to your news reading software provider; ASCII art is an important tradition of Usenet.
I stand 6'1.5". Fully loaded, my ruck dolly's goods reach my nipples, and hanging off the back, besides the main cargo, is a broom, a 2 QT canteen, a canvas and iron lounge chair in a stuff bag, an oven timer, and a beach towel and pillow combination with a carry strap, being used to hold the chair and canteen tight against the upright back of the dolly.
The load weighs easily 300#, I can barely lift even the single top mini-steamer-trunk by myself.
The wheel base is of course narrow, and even a half inch unevenness in the sidewalk tosses it off balance enough to fall over, if I don't take special care to cross the bump at right angles. It has fallen over so many times, the bottom steamer trunk is held together only by the tension of the straps keeping the whole rig intact; the leading side is broken free of the front and back panels.
Intro to my ruck dolly:
This picture is a crude lie, the straps holding it together aren't showing, and the stuff on the right of the dolly upright comes clear to the top, I just showed it lower down so the handle would be clear. The broom handle and stuff bag reach all the way down; the broom sits _inside_ three transverse arced metal hoops that provide stiffness to the dolly upright, and so rests on the dolly lift platform. The stuff bag reaches down to hook _inside_ the wheel axel, which in this model doesn't rotate.
Top: left: sleeping bag; center: book bag; right: dolly "D"
handle.
Below sleeping bag: stadium pillow used as a lid.
Next row: shaving kit, milk crate food bin, American
Tourister rolling portfolio (for computer), dolly upright,
broom straw end, canvas and cast iron lounge chair's stuff
bag, "Pepsi" beach pillow/towel combo with strap used to
hold back components against dolly upright.
Third row: Red
steamer trunk (clean clothes, soap, and laundry), dolly
upright, broom handle, 2 QT canteen beside stuff bag.
Bottom row: Black steamer trunk (off season clothes,
paperwork, dress suit and shoes, unused psychoactive meds,
shoe polish, computer software, other litter), dolly
upright, dolly wheel and wheel brace.
Below bottom row:
dolly metal platform to provide lift to the load forward of
the dolly upright.
Two long nylon straps go from the wheel axel supports, around the two steamer trunks and back to the dolly upright; they are tensioned by ratchet devices that rest under the portfolio.
Two short nylon straps are threaded through the two long straps, in the into-the-picture direction, one under the shaving kit in a triangle, up through the milk crate handles, over the sleeping bag, down to the milk crate handle again, across the portfolio through its carrying straps, through the dolly upright, through the stuff bag carrying strap to lift the stuff bag an inch off the pavement, back around the dolly upright, where it connects hook to hook with the other strap.
That strap goes back through the portfolio handles, down through the milk crate handle, under the stadium pillow, out of the screen through the milk crate handle, down through the two long straps in a through-the-picture direction, back up and in through the opposite face milk crate handle, to the left through yet another milk crate handle (there is one on all four sides of the crate), and down to connect hook to hook to the other end of the first short strap.
The book bag hangs from its carry straps, hooked criss-cross around the dolly "D" handle and held there by the engine's hand when in motion.
Hung from the shaving kit (really a soft sided lunch box rescued from a dumpster) is a hand-towel used as a wash-rag for sink-bathing. Hanging from the canteen strap is a small clip-on kitchen timer.
The whole rig weighs in excess of 300# when the food bin is full of canned food, and pulls on level ground with about five pounds of force, and up a handicapped ramp with about fifty pounds of force.
It is in all ways superior to a shopping cart, has received many compliments for "neatness", and besides, I didn't steal it, I bought or scavanged all the parts.
From a handle not depicted on the Red steamer trunk, a cardboard sign hangs from two over-sized bent paper clips. It reads: "Example Homeless Veteran, Lest Clovis Forget", to remember the day the Clovis, California Veterans Memorial Building staff called the police to drive me away from sleeping on their outside patio pavement.
