woodstock.4: How the WELL came to Woodstock
woodstock.4.0: David Gans (tnf) Sat 6 Aug 94 10:29
Someone must know the story!
woodstock.4.1: Danica Remy (remy) Sat 6 Aug 94 14:11
Monday August 1st Selim Vural from Woodstock '94 calls the WELL.
Jeff takes call, hands of to Teresa after saying "I'll go!"
Danica gets details, runs it by a few people. We all say yes!
Everyone in the Studio starts to worry but we know that this will
push us to complete many spinning ideas by August 12th. Bruce says "If it
can't be done it 2 weeks its not worth doing"
Yikes, we all hold our breath and.......
Websters, Anna, Gail, M, and a fleet of others begin to tackle the
the issues. What are they? Like we have time to post ;-)
woodstock.4.2: David Gans (tnf) Sat 6 Aug 94 23:04
Danica calls to ask if I would like to go to Woodstock. Hm, interesting
idea, but I'm getting married in five weeks, and Rita's birthday is that
Sunday, so... I agree to host the conference from my armchair Woodstock.
I gleefully inform Danica that a mutual friend of ours is working on the
production team backstage as Woodstock and I give her his number...
woodstock.4.3: gimme an "F"! (reva) Sun 7 Aug 94 08:10
Gans says "Wanna cohost this Woodstock conference?"
I says "Love to!"
There you have it.
woodstock.4.4: Gail Williams (gail) Sun 7 Aug 94 11:57
Heh! just about... in between, Maurice calls me and Phil into a meeting
Tuesday morning and asks who from the support or conferencing staffs should
go to Woodstock if this can be arranged. I think about the terrific
workload we've got piled up, hesitate for half a sec, and then say "We've
got to send M." Maurice tells me to ask her if she can go, and see if we
actually sign the contract before announcing this is happening. I call M
into my little office and ask her if she'd be interested in making some WELL
and World Wide Web space collaboratively with people on the Woodstock site.
She immediately agrees. Within an hour we're making notes for each other
about how to configure the demo accounts, and what would be easy for
newcomers who want to tell their own truths and make their own myths.
We hear that a CD-ROM is already planned from the festival, and Danica tells
us that our interwoven words from theis conference, and contributions mailed
to festival@well.com, can become part of the future fossil record for this
time in our culture.
We make up this conference directory, and get Pete and Bryan on the case for
a way to have visitors confirm they grant permission to release to the web,
and republish. We start inviting people to seed the bed for the conference.
It germinates and springs up!
woodstock.4.5: otis (nycjag) Mon 8 Aug 94 07:34
Wow! This is a real rush being here!
woodstock.4.6: on the other side of the sun (miga) Mon 8 Aug 94 11:27
Yeah! I'm excited. This is going to be great! So I wrote up a basic
command card to hand out to the people at the festival, explaining how to
read and post. And I did a little brainstorming about the conference,
though we all agree that it should be driven by the people at Woodstock as
much as possible. So we're opening up Friday! I can't wait!!
woodstock.4.7: Virtuality *is* its own Reward (gail) Wed 10 Aug 94 21:08
Our intrepid team has flown out and landed safe and sound...!
woodstock.4.8: on the other side of the sun (miga) Wed 10 Aug 94 23:54
And has managed to log on from the site! Greetings from Saugerties! ;)
woodstock.4.9: David Gans (tnf) Wed 10 Aug 94 23:56
How's the weather, Milhous?
woodstock.4.10: otis (nycjag) Thu 11 Aug 94 05:51
Have fun you guys! Lots of it!
woodstock.4.11: editorial comment (green) Thu 11 Aug 94 09:36
Please describe the physical layout! (Of course, we'll see it on Good
Morning America! 8^|)
I remember that there was a woods (with very strange directional signs
postd on the trees) that you would reach by facing the stage, walking about
halfway back to the hilltop which marked the edge of the "audience" and
going to your left. Past the forest was the big field with the big standup
swing you see in the movie (teepee shaped), then past that were the
toilets, then past that was the free food and then just past that was the
hogfarm hill, with its own little stage where there was truly charming
stuff happening the whole time - and it was so much less frantic that
that's where I stayed. (One night the little hill that led down to the
hogfarm stage - with the bus ' further' parked behind it - was covered with
hippies holding the candles that hogfarm handed out).
What's the layout this time?
woodstock.4.12: on the other side of the sun (miga) Thu 11 Aug 94 10:16
The weather has been surprisingly cool... though it is beginning to warm up
today. I haven't been over the site yet but the map makes it look ENORMOUS.
It is in beautiful wooded countryside and there are murals painted on a
fence that runs along the road leading into the site - lots of different
artists did them, and they're really cool! I'll check out the rest of the
place later. The people here [mostly workers and volunteers now] are so
friendly and cool. It's fun to show them what we do here!
woodstock.4.13: Ground Control to Major M (bb) Thu 11 Aug 94 10:17

It's totally radical up here. You get two choices on where to sleep, bunks
or under the stars. For having rules against drinking or drugs, they aren't
being enforced too strongly. I'm only working concessions, and the company we
came up with is so disorganized. If we have to wait one more day for
schedules,we're going to freak. We're getting a T-SHIRT and $6.00-7.50 an
hour,so it's not that bad.
.
woodstock.4.15: otis (nycjag) Thu 11 Aug 94 11:27
who is up there suing the wstock accounts? are people already there? (fans)
or are these workers unrelated to the well?
woodstock.4.16: Shagford (wstock4) Thu 11 Aug 94 11:50
Well Im here the consession. The Woodstock '94 Pizza Co., to be exact.
Come buy Pizza! Umm, good... :^)

Hey, was that you in the Times this morning?
woodstock.4.19: on the other side of the sun (miga) Thu 11 Aug 94 12:09
Today there are people here working concessions and other stands, also
volunteers and setup crew. I think local people can get passes and many
have volunteered to help out here. It's wild for them to see all this where
there used to be just fields. Anyway, everyone here is psyched to
participate, so we're letting 'em rip!
woodstock.4.20: otis (nycjag) Thu 11 Aug 94 12:11
cool! you guys have a digital camera? that would be cool...

Sun donated a sparc10 for the local server on site (thank you Mike Clary &
John Gage) then they sent us this awesome networking guy Frank Whikham to
get his
sun server working as our router.
We will up date the pages tonight while we sleep to the WELL WWW server.
conference should be up on www.well.com
there is a site map up on the WWW server with ourt location CLEARLY marked

EMI gave us the local ppp connection.
The Guys from Internet World are guiding traffic in the booth.
street artists are painting panels with pictures of people.

Boy, do I wish I had Mosaic now...
woodstock.4.27: gimme an "F"! (reva) Thu 11 Aug 94 14:45
You and me both!
So you guys there are under a tent, or what? Are you gonna be operating
round the clock? Are you gonna be able to hear the MUSIC from where you
are???
woodstock.4.28: Danica Remy (wstock2) Thu 11 Aug 94 15:18
Under a tent and phots will be up later tonight. You can get to them
using lynx if you don't have mosiac.
Yes under a pointed tent.
Round the clock? Wheil this crew is going to sleep tonight to make up
for the setup times last night and then we are going to try the all nighter
on Saturday.
Yes, we will be able to hear the music even over all these generators.
Actually M slept next to the generator at about 4pm EST so as to drown
out the sound of this skill saws going next to our heads. ummm!
woodstock.4.29: Hoover Chan (hchan) Thu 11 Aug 94 15:48

How are you folks connected to the Net? Modem/SLIP/PPP or 56kbps?
This is exciting.
woodstock.4.30: Jennifer Powell (jnfr) Thu 11 Aug 94 17:41
Are the photos for Mosaic only, or will you have some GIFs for us?
Hello to all WELLstaff and others out there....have a great time, and tell
us everything!
Jennifer
woodstock.4.31: gail williams (gail) Thu 11 Aug 94 17:49
It's possible to set up the website for easy download of imagaes using
!lynx from the WELL... check it out!
woodstock.4.32: on the other side of the sun (miga) Thu 11 Aug 94 18:11
Right... typing !lynx http://www.well.com/woodstock/ will connect you via
lynx [you need to have terminal emulation set, like vt-100]
You can get the images that way.
woodstock.4.33: Brian Battuello (bb) Thu 11 Aug 94 18:31
The whole WELL staff was just around my terminal, checking out the images.
Totally, totally awesome. Great stories, great pix. Looks like everyone
but Mujibar and Serijul are there.
Do you have time to get any more pix outside the tent, to give us an idea
what the area looks like? How's the weather holding out? Didn't hear
anyone complaining too much.
We're all here with you guys. Keep it coming!!! ^bb^
woodstock.4.34: editorial comment (green) Thu 11 Aug 94 19:47
yow, easy enough - just downloaded a map.gif - haven't viewed it yet. Where

woodstock.4.35: Davis McPherson (davism) Thu 11 Aug 94 21:59

are they single individual people?

Open accounts.
woodstock.4.39: The Next Generation (mglito) Fri 12 Aug 94 10:55
So we don't ever REALLY know who they are, huh? (Unless *they* tell us)
woodstock.4.40: on the other side of the sun (miga) Fri 12 Aug 94 11:13
Well, each time anyone types respond it automatically asks "What's your
handle" and has them put in a pseud. We can't make thousands of temp
accounts, it'd be total chaos. ;)
they are linked by number to a specific terminal here in da tent.
woodstock.4.41: Groovy galabonzo (wstock1) Fri 12 Aug 94 11:44
How amny are being excluded from this event because of a lack of funds? What
does the mass greed of corporations say to us as a society? The people here
arent as dangerous as the authorities that are raking in all of our cash.
One word. Everything here is geared to pull money out of our pockets. Peace
,Love and Mastercard dude!

woodstock.4.42: (wstock1) Fri 12 Aug 94 11:52

For those of us on the other end of the continent, what's been the impact of
this thing on neighboring towns? Does my uncle in Woodstock have people in
his barn?
woodstock.4.48: Dan Levy (danlevy) Fri 12 Aug 94 20:28
I have no idea what the impact is. When I got here last night, we hit
absolutely NO traffic driving in from Manhattan. It's very crowded here. Campsites are remote in the extreme and kinda hard to find.
woodstock.4.49: video (wstock2) Fri 12 Aug 94 20:49

we all needed a break nad IRC is less work for all of us.

Hey guys - cool stuff.
I'll be doing my basic "Internet 101" class here in San Francisco
tomarrow, from 1pm-5pm, our time (4pm - 8pm your time) and I will
defintely show the WELL-woodstock stuff during that class. (It'll be my
best chance to actually spend some timelooking at it all - I have just
been so busy lately...)
I'll try and get some folks at the class to post some reactions to what
they see, so we'll have people in San Francisco reading stuff created at
Woodstock, and responding to it... If I can, I will be videotaping some
of this, so that we may be able to use it later for something or other...
The weather here in San Fran has been amazing these last days. Truly glad
to be alive in this area.
Fromwhat we see on MTV, y'all are having a fine time there.
Smiles and blessings,
-Matisse

Reports are that rain is on it's way. Major rain. WE have scored a bag of
oops that a box of plastic bags and have ripped them up to cover all the
machines from the rain that will mostlikley pour thru the holes in our tent.
bagged up and duct taped all the electrical outlets that asre out side of
our tent. It's really hot and sweaty here! Lots of mud people walking in
and out of our tent.

woodstock.4.72: We must be in HEAVEN, man! (tnf) Sun 14 Aug 94 20:49
Reva and I spent the day participating in a fabulous treasure hunt, driving
around San Francisco in a van with five other pals. We took second place,
having solved all 16 clues and having arrived ONE MINUTE after the winning
team. We had a ball!
Managing this conference has been fun, and not exactly hard work. Staying
online all day yesterday was sort of a drag since the weather was awesome
around here, but I got a lot of other things done in between enjoying the
woodstock action. I've seen about enough of MTV to last me a while, though.
woodstock.4.73: miga (wstock1) Sun 14 Aug 94 21:22
Heh! I've seen enough mud to last me a while! We're packing up, Peter
Gabriel is playing and we have one computer still logged on for the last few
postings and mail messages. Boy are we tired. Miko is working on getting
today's stuff up on the web and we're all hoping they let us on the plane
with all our muddy gear. It's been intense - we made over 300 scrapbook
pages andf had quite a few folks who stopped by regularly to check into the
conference. It was also great having Jordan, Dan, Hewitt and Matt hanging
around and helping us out. Yeah! Well I better go help finins off the
packing, just checking in. d;)

And the team has safely returned, M just checked in from SFO.
Sounds like a WWII prison-camp escape movie, 4am departure, sneaking
under the fences and through the mud to meet the resistance van waiting
in the woods, rushed to the airport to catch the last flight out of New
York city.
woodstock.4.80: Fumihiko "Miko" Matsumura (miko) Wed 17 Aug 94 14:45
Brilliant observation.
I swear it was about 90 seconds between me finally pulling the plug on
our hub, grabbing it and getting (running) to the waiting limo.
It was a "just in time" getaway. I even left two pairs of clean socks on
the countertop (oops) in my haste to make the flight.
Actually, the traffic ended up being so sparse at 4:00 in the morning
that we had time to go to a car wash, and we all cleaned the mud off our
shoes!
woodstock.4.81: on the other side of the sun (miga) Wed 17 Aug 94 15:17
With the high-pressure hose! And considered ourselves lucky to have the
opportunity. :) I thought it went great, we had rock solid support from
the home team and the away team worked wonders too! Gopod was definitely
with us.
