Each chapter has an alias of the form foo_chapter@siggraph.org. I will replace this with [electronic-chapter-name]-chapter@siggraph.org which will be an alias for [electronic-chapter-name]-leadership@siggraph.org. For example, nyc-chapter@siggraph.org will forward to nyc-leadership@siggraph.org. So please populate your leadership list rapidly. Thanks, Thierry -----Message d'origine----- De : pcleaders-admin@siggraph.org [mailto:pcleaders-admin@siggraph.org]De la part de Thierry Frey Envoyé : samedi 8 septembre 2001 09:15 À : pcleaders@siggraph.org; pcleaders2@siggraph.org Objet : [pcleaders] IMPORTANT - Chapters Mailing Lists - IMPORTANT Hello everyone, This is a long message and I apologize in advance. I'm the first person to hate them! But there is a lot of information that you need to acquire. Please save this mail for future reference. BTW, migrate to pcleaders NOW at http://www.siggraph.org/listinfo/pcleaders, if you still have not done it. Monday will be too late. Thanks, Thierry ps: do keep reading, though. I am in the process of creating the mailing lists for every chapter, at least for everyone who gave me the role account name for their chapter, as well as a forwarding email address. If you still have not sent me anything, do so before the end of next week. Because after that, I will probably not want to hear about Mailman or Majordomo for the rest of the year!!!! So, here's is the Modus Operandi. I will take New York City as an example, when needed. (Thanks, Scott!). Part I - What you need to do ============================ (goto Part II - Vocabulary and come back) When the ESCP (see below) receives notification of the creation of the Mailman mailing list, he should migrate the subscribed users of the older Majordomo lists. We suggest the following migration: - foo-officers -> [role]-leadership - foo-talk -> [role]-discussions or [role]-members - foo-announce -> [role]-announcements I will leave it up to you to decide whether you do it for all subscribed user, or you let each user subscribe to the new list. Whatever you decide, here are a few tips: - http://www.siggraph.org/mailman/listinfo lists all the Mailman lists - http://www.siggraph.org/mailman/listinfo/foo is the info page for list "foo" - http://www.siggraph.org/mailman/admin/foo is the administration page for list "foo" - to recover the list of subscribed user for a Majordomo list, send the message "who [list-name]" to majordomo@siggraph.org To let users subscribe themselves, ask them to go to the list info page. This will be a long process (the pcleaders migration is still not finished!!) To subscribe all your users, go to the list administration page. This will be faster. When you have migrated everyone, send me a mail and I will delete the Majordomo mailing lists This needs to be a quick process because there are over 40 chapters. Once the Mailman lists are created, I would ask that you have everyone migrate in under a week, because I will delete the Majordomo list at that point. Part II - Vocabulary ==================== Professional & Student Chapter Committee, aka PSCC -------------------------------------------------- The PSCC is a group of people that works closely with the ACM SIGGRAPH Director for Chapters. It mission consists in being the liaison between ACM SIGGRAPH and the Chapters, organizing Chapter activities at the annual SIGGRAPH conference, supporting the Chapters throughout the year. Official Chapter Name --------------------- generic: Foo Bar ACM SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter example: New York City ACM SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter comment: Please not that the city name comes first, followed by ACM SIGGRAPH in CAPITAL letters, terminated by Professional Chapter. This is the way you should publicize your chapter. Electronic Chapter Name ----------------------- generic: foo-bar example: new-york-city comment: The electonic chapter name is mainly used in email addresses. This is the reason why it contains no space character, but dashes. It is also all lowercase. If a well known (i.e. worldwide) abbreviation exists, we may decide to use it instead of the full name. Therefore, "new-york-city" and "nyc" could be both used. Electronic Services Contact Person, aka ESCP -------------------------------------------- generic: The ESCP is the person that will be the contact point between your chapter and the Electronic Services Chair. example: Scott Lang, whose email is lang@siggraph.org comment: This person should be "web-active", or at least "email-active", i.e. read his/her mail at least every few days. It will help if this person is an active volunteer of your chapter. This person will have to manage the chapter's Mailman mailing lists, so knowledge of computers is a definite plus. Chapter Role Account, aka [role] -------------------------------- generic: [foo]sig example: nycsig comment: your role account allows you to manage your mailing lists and you web site hosted on siggraph.org. It is at most eight (8) characters wide, and must end with the postfix "sig". The associated email, i.e. [role]@siggraph.org, will forward messages to the email address of the ESCP. So, "nycsig@siggraph.org" forwards to "lang@siggraph.org". Chapter Mailing Lists --------------------- generic: [electronic-chapter-name]-announcements@siggraph.org [electronic-chapter-name]-discussion@siggraph.org [electronic-chapter-name]-leadership@siggraph.org [electronic-chapter-name]-members@siggraph.org example: nyc-announcements@siggraph.org nyc-discussion@siggraph.org nyc-leadership@siggraph.org nyc-members@siggraph.org comment: mailing lists are one of the best communication channels available to a Chapter or to the PSCC. Four mailings lists are created for every chapter: - announcements is a public list to publicize your upcoming events (usually a moderated) - discussion is a public list open to non-members - leadership is a private list to allow the Chapter's leaders to communicate and work together - members is a private discussion list for members More lists can be created if chapters have extra needs. For instance, New York City ACM SIGGRAPH needed a few more lists, for elections, volunteers. The [role], therefore the ESCP, is the owner of the lists. Scott Lang manages the mailing lists for New York City ACM SIGGRAPH. The following aliases should have been created at the same time than the lists: [role]-announcements@siggraph.org [role]-discussion@siggraph.org [role]-leadership@siggraph.org [role]-members@siggraph.org The older Majordomo lists were the following: foo-officers@siggraph.org foo-talk@siggraph.org foo-announce@siggraph.org Chapter Web Site ---------------- generic: http://[electronic-chapter-name].siggraph.org example: http://nyc.siggraph.org comment: Chapters can have their web sites hosted on siggraph.org. If for any reason you prefer to be hosted elsewhere, we can set up a redirection from siggraph.org to your host. Your webmaster will be able to manage the web site by using CVS.
