The package will include a data resource much like an encyclopedia of fusion physics, and a game that teaches kids some of the fundamentals of fusion, and the technology behind developing a fusion power plant. Terri Larsen will be discussing the production and development of this work-in-progress. The original images and animations are created in Alias version 8, and some of the imagery uses CAD data for a experimental fusion vessel, the tokamak. Terri has created models to illustrate atoms, plasma and the magnetic fields that confine it, and will have some of the interactive modules in the game and test animations to show during the presentation. Y Event: 18-Nov-1998 : Visualizing Geology: at SDSU, on the Web, and on the cheap (Jeff Sale and Rob Mellors) Attendance: 5 + presenters & their guests Brief Description: The Geology Department at San Diego State University has pioneered the use of computer graphics in their curriculum. The Visualization Laboratory, the Central Asia Research and Remediation Exchange (CARRE), the Computer Imaging, Visualization, and Animation center (CIVAC) and the Death Valley Visualization Project are all products of this innovative department. The Visualization Laboratory was designed primarily for teaching and research of visualization in the Geological Sciences in the areas of tectonics, fluid flow, modeling, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, seismology, seismic reflection processing, and environmental geology, with major assistance from several geologists and imaging experts from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena. The Viz Lab was founded by Dr. Eric Frost and is now managed by Dr. Robert Mellors and Lisa Heizer. This evening will include examples of past and present research at the SDSU geology department, including compute-intensive seismic data processing and visualization with SGI workstations, a walking tour of the Viz Lab, a virtual tour of other earth science graphics resources on the web, and a tutorial on how you can create dramatic fly-overs affordably on your home PC. Attendance: 14 + presenter & his guests Brief Description: SGI began in the early 80s as a company using commercial off-the-shelf CPUs to build its 3D graphics workstations. With its acquisition of MIPS in 1992, the company gained control of its CPU technology, and evolved its product line into a platform for the 3D workstation world that was analogous to what the Apple Macintosh was for the 2D PC world -- the high price, high-performance proprietary solution for graphics. In January of 1999 the company amazed the computer world by turning about face and announcing a line of Pentium-based PCs running Windows NT, optimized for 3D. At this meeting SGI's Eric Stephenson will give us a hands-on demo of this exciting new product and talk about the software available for it now and in the future. Eric Stephenson has been a Systems Engineer with SGI for the past four years. He has fifteen years experience in pre-sales technical support with companies such as Sun, HP and Apollo, and prior to that worked for eleven years in Research and Development. Any Collaborators? Y Event: 19-Apr-2000 : A Virtual Journey Through Real History: Using 3D Tools to Model San Diego's Old Town (Steve Schoenherr, Department of History, USD) Attendance: 6 + presenters Brief Description: Join us at the University of San Diego Department of History for the San Diego SIGGRAPH April meeting, to get a first look at The History of Old Town San Diego on CD-ROM, a project by Steve Schoenherr, Iris Engstrand, and Thor Brickman to create a multimedia history of Old Town San Diego from the era of the Kumeyaay Native-Americans in the fifteenth century through the Spanish and Mexican and United States eras. The interactive presentation allows the viewer to walk through a 3D model of the pueblo as it existed in 1870, including 55 buildings and the landscape of San Diego Bay, Point Loma, Ballast Point, Presidio Hill, Mission Valley and the San Diego River. Original documents include maps, drawings, photographs and first-hand accounts from settlers and visitors. A variety of historical accounts include the complete text of Smythe's History of San Diego, a classic history but long out-of-print in its book version, and more recent articles from the Journal of San Diego History. A detailed Timeline provides a chronology of San Diego history from the prehistoric era to the present. Multimedia essays provide background and context with narration and interactive illustrations. San Diego SIGGRAPH is being given an in-depth look at this work in progress on the application of 3D and multimedia technology to the teaching of local history. Any Collaborators?
