Lara Flynn Boyle and Peggy Lipton |
A decade ago a TV show appeared as a mid-season replacement which
was like nothing ever seen before on network television. Almost every
reviewer described it as "quirky." A cross between a murder mystery,
a nighttime soap and a Fellini film, it was at times maddening --
pseudo-mystical, incoherent, fickle and inconstant with character
development and plot lines, and aggressively unsettling. But it had three
features usually totally absent from prime time: it was unusual,
intricate, and enchanting.
It was also highly influential. Shows like Picket Fences, Northern Exposure, and even NYPD Blue would never have made it on the air if not for the precedent of Twin Peaks. The show helped launch the careers of young actors like Lara Flynn Boyle (Donna Hayward) and Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne), and provided a comeback vehicle for veteran actors such as Peggy Lipton (Norma Jennings), Piper Laurie (Catherine Martel) and Michael Ontkean (Sheriff Harry S. Truman). Among my coworkers, friends and family the show sparked a lively email culture -- partly just to compare notes on the complex plot and character relationships -- and also inspired several delightful parties. |
Now, with ten years of hindsight, the show continues to fascinate. An annual
Twin Peaks Festival is
still held in the Seattle area, involving many of the shooting locales.
A news group and many web sites devoted to the show flourish on the internet.
The Bravo cable channel has rebroadcast the series. And we (Alan
and Dixie) have decided that after ten years this phenomenon deserves another
look.
Many fans agree that the show lost it's "edge" after the killer of homecoming queen Laura Palmer was revealed on 1 December 1990. Prior to that every eccentric character (and that means all of 'em) was a suspect. Also, only the pilot and subsequent theatrical film were shot on location in the Pacific Northwest -- the hour long episodes used stock footage and a soundstage in LA. For these reasons we have selected an itinerary that includes the pilot, the first 16 episodes -- up to the solving of the mystery -- and then the film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

We thought it would be the most fun to re-view and discuss this show in the company of fellow fans, and perhaps also some curious newbies who'd heard the buzz but didn't get on the ride at the start. We will of course assemble our vast collection of Twin PeaksTM merchandising tie-ins, such as The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, the Agent Dale Cooper dictaphone tapes, the TV show and movie soundtracks, the ACCESS Guide To Twin Peaks (no kidding) and various geegaws from locales in Washington state. And we invite you to bring your own favorite Twin Peaks trivia question for the contest, as well as any other goofball TP memorabilia you may have acquired and unexplainably not thrown out. |

"...11:30 AM February 24th, entering the town of Twin Peaks..." |

We will provide food. That means dinner, and themed snacks which may include cherry and apple pie, baguette with butter and brie, glazed donuts, and a damn fine cup of coffee (regular or unleaded). In response to the ubiquitous question "can I bring anything?" we say BRING A FOOD OR BEVERAGE YOU SAW ON THE SHOW! (We hear that gum you like is going to come back into style...) |
