MITRE SF Group: Events

Here is some of our past planning activity to give you a flavor of our style and some past activities. Now all our planning takes place on our mailing list and is no longer posted here due to a shortage of staff. (Shucks, I just don't have the time anymore). Those interested in participating on the mailing list please contact: jeannie@mitre.org. The mailing list is where all the action is. We are a group now scattered far and wide over the galaxie. Many MITRE folks have moved away to other adventures. We stay in touch at scifi@linus.mitre.org.

4 April 1998 Saturday Outing Here's a chance to find those missing volumes, sequels & prequels that you've been looking for....

Several used & antiquarian book shops in southwestern & south-central New Hampshire band together a couple of times per year for the "Round the Mountain Book Sale" (the mountain in question being Mt. Monadnock). One of these shops is dedicated solely to SF & Fantasy, and they generally have a pretty good selection.

So is anyone up for this?

The sale is Thu-Sun, 2-5 April. If memory serves, that's the same weekend that Lost In Space opens. Here's a possible agenda:

Sat 4 April

  • 10:30-ish ... Rendezvous @ Parker's Maple Barn for brunch
  • Noon-ish .... Head over to Books & More, New Hamphsire's only SF & Fantasy specialty bookstore; look for gems
  • Eventually .. Make our way back toward Nashua, potentially stopping at Crook's Books in Wilton, or Mori Books in Amherst (who also has a pretty sizeable SF selection) as time allows
  • 5:30-ish .... Dinner somewhere, potentially Coyote Cafe in Nashua or Shorty's Mexican Roadhouse in Nashua
  • 7:00-ish .... Take in Lost In Space at either Tyngsboro General Cinema (across from Pheasant Lane Mall) or at the new Lowell Cinemas near the former Wang Tower at the meeting point of Routes 3 and 110 and the Lowell Connector (giant screen, stadium seating, awesome sound)

Hmmm... that's a pretty full day. If you feel like paring that down some, I'm game.

February 1998 Sphere Several of us went to see "Sphere" when it opened in the Burlington Cinema on Fri, 13 Feb 1998. Included here is a link to the movie Sphere. It wasn't the best movie, but it is probably worth a free rental from the local library :-).

This con has somewhat less focus on TV, movies, and gaming, and more on books, than some others we've attended in the past, but it's by no means an exclusively-print focus. I personally have always enjoyed it.
