COOPERATIVE ADVENTURES

Adventure Education Bibliography

NEW!You can now order some (more as I research and create the links) of these books online because of an agreement I have entered into with Amazon.com, an online bookstore that I have been ordering from for the past year or so. Clicking on the title will take you to the Amazon.com website, will provide you with further information about each book, and will offer you the opportunity to order it online, usually at a savings of 10-30%. For my part in the deal, I receive a small percentage of each order you place that originates on my website. Thanks in advance for your business.

Rohnke, Karl. Silver Bullets -- A Guide to Initiative Problems, Adventure Games, and Trust Activities. Project Adventure, Inc., Hamilton, MA, 1984.

The very first adventure education book I came across when starting Cooperative Adventures in 1989. Among other things, the idea for Big Red came from here. As with all of Rohnke's books, most actitivites are geared to 7th grade through adult. You'll find quite a lot of covert (as well as overt) competition in the activities.

Rohnke, Karl. The Bottomless Bag. Karl Rohnke, Hamilton, MA, 1988. [out of print]

An impressive collection (365 pages) of the best of Karl's quarterly newsletter, Bag of Tricks (10 years worth). Not available through Amazon.com. I recently checked the Project Adventure webpage and they don't list it either -- ?

Rohnke, Karl. The Bottomless Baggie. Karl Rohnke, Hamilton, MA, 1991.

The first sequel to Bottomless Bag, covering the next 2.5 years of Bag of Tricks. Title is currently out-of-print but Amazon.com will try to find a copy if you'll click on the title and go to their webpage.

Rohnke, Karl. The Bottomless Bag Again. Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, Dubuque, Iowa, 1994.

The next sequel to Bottomless Bag.

Rohnke, Karl. Cowstails and Cobras II: A Guide to Games, Initiatives, Ropes Courses, and Adventure Curriculum. Project Adventure, Inc. in cooperation with Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, Dubuque, Iowa, 1989.

This is a thorough update of an earlier edition which predates the publication of Silver Bullets. A lot of good ideas. See comments re: competition and activity level under Silver Bullets.

Rohnke, Karl & Butler, Steve. Quicksilver: Adventure Games, Initiative Problems, Trust Activities, and a Guide to Effective Leadership. Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, Dubuque, Iowa, 1997.

A good resource though a bit pricey at $23.50 for a 286-page paperback (with no discount from Amazon.com).

Rohnke, Karl , et al. The Complete Ropes Course Manual. Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, Dubuque, Iowa, 1997.

Schoel, Jim, Prouty, Dick, & Radcliffe, Paul. Islands of Healing: A Guide to Adventure-Based Counseling. Project Adventure, Inc., Hamilton, MA, 1988.

Sobel, Jeffrey. Everybody Wins: 393 Non-Competitive Games for Young Children. Walker and Company, New York, 1983.

Webster, Steven E. Ropes Course Safety Manual -- An Instructor's Guide to Initiatives, and Low and High Elements. Project Adventure, Inc., Hamilton, MA, 1988.

Weinstein, Matt and Goodman, Joel. Playfair: Everybody's Guide to Noncompetitive Play. Impact Publishers, San Luis Obispo, CA, 1980.

This is the book I go to when I need an activity for a large group of people, using few (if any) props.
