In 1877, Giovanni Schiaparelli, an astronomer at the Brera Observatory in Milan, began a landmark study of Mars. His famous map introduced new names for the Martian landmarks.

While his idea that Mars was covered with canals has been discredited, his evocative and euphonious nomenclature remains in use.
